->> the following is an e-mail I received regarding some Elinchrom monolights I listed here in the classifieds. It would appear that nowhere is sacred....sigh

Hello Randy,
Thanks for the prompt response, and also for accepting the offer to sell it to me, i am set to go and he accepts to pay the price i.e $550 for the three.Again I am particularly impressed by the prompt attention accorded the matter considering the need for us to conclude the dealing a timely manner. I have a client in the US who is owing me a total sum of $4500 and i would instruct him to make out a US Cashiers cheque,so you can deduct your cost price from the payment and send the remaining balance to me, I have a reputable shipping agent that will be coming to your place for the pickup as soon as you receive the cheque and cashed .So give me your full name address and phone numbers so that i can instruct my client to issue the cheque in your name. Please get back to me as soon as you get this mail so that i can know my stand.i will want you to provide this information so that i can forward it to my client,so that the payment can be send to you okay.

FROM ROSE GUEI
Abidjan cote D` Ivoire
West Africa.
Dearest,

I am the first duaghter of an ex military/ex president been an opposition party to the present Government of COTE D`IVOIRE. On the 19th sept 2002 my father/mother including every members of our family was murdered by the unknown REBELS during the time they attack our house by shooting and looting, even this is one of the things that contributed to the present crisis in our country today.

God so kind I was not in town when the incident occurred, the plans of the REBELS is to kill every members of our family so that no one will rise up to revenge as time goes on. I am in our country without any one knowing although I am on hiding so that the unknown REBELS will not get to me and kill me like they killed all the members of our family. Why I still stay back in our country is to transfer the $18.5mUSD which my late father deposited in the custody of AFRICAN JOINT SECURITY ASSISTANCE COMPANY, he deposited the fund as a family treasure containing AFRICAN ART WORK FOR EXPORT for security reasons, as security company does not operate as bank where some one can deposit his/her money openly.

Before the death of my father he gave me the covering documents of the fund deposited in the security company, as I am his first duaghter and he so much loved me that was why he made me the beneficiary of the two iron trunk boxes containing the $18.5mUSD. Right now I wish to transfer this fund to you so that you will assist me to invest the money into any viable sector in your country, also you will help me to join you in your country for me to start up a new life with you there immediately the fund gets to you. since I am no longer safe as far as Africa is concern at the moment, I wanted to transfer the fund before leaving the country because this fund is my last hope and the only hope I have now.

Before I even pick you to assist me I have prayed and slept over it asking God to provide for me a Godly minded person that will assist me in this transaction. I will give you more details of the transaction in my next mail. Please get back to me through this my personal and private email address.....

->> Sorry I reposted what was in the other post. I looked right over it the first time.

I'm glad she didn't put all her trust in me. I'm sure I have let her down.

I wonder if she would give me enough for a 1200mm Canon for helping her :)

->> Randy,
Its funny that you have posted this, becasue the same EXACT thing happened to me just recntly. I posted an ad in the classified section and was contacted by someone (probably the same guy) with a very similar story. Here is a direct copy of the first email-

HI ,
THANKS A LOT . I'M CURRENTLY IN WEST AFRICA AND FOR PAYMENT,I WILL INSTRUCT A CLIENT OF MINE IN THE STATES WHO OWES ME SOME FUNDS MORE THAN THE ASKING PRICE TO ISSUE YOU A CASHIER'S CHECK ON MY BEHALF, THEN YOU CASH IT & DEDUCT YOURS, $2,300.THE BALANCE WILL BE MEANT FOR SHIPPING ,TAXES,INSURANCE AND OTHERS,I AM PLEASE WITH THE INFORMATION YOU GAVE. THEREFORE LET ME HAVE YOUR FULL NAME,
ADDRESS &PHONE#[CELL& LAND].IF THIS IS CLEAR TO YOU,THEN GIVE ME A GO-AHEAD
INORDER TO HAVE HIM SEND IT ASAP. HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU SOON.
MY REGARDS

Being the trusting person that I am, I decided I would agree to the sale. (However I would of course make sure the check would clear first before sending anything.) No check came for a couple weeks, though the guy kept emailing me to ask why I hadn't sent the lens and I told him because I had no check for it yet. I started to doubt the credibility of this guy and told I would not send the lens. The check finally comes anyways in a strange brown envelope post-marked from Boston, no return address, and "the check" from a bank in Houston. Okay so maybe this could still be legit, right? (j/k I knew by now) I call 411 anyways and ask for the Bank's # and hey the Bank is Real and they have three branches in Houston!!! Wow so I called the number and get a teller on the phone, and guess what the remitter "John Lewis" is actually a member. So next the lady at the bank asked for the check's serial number... and SURPRISE the check is NOT real. So I still have the fake check right here and all of the emails he sent me. Hmmm I bet there is a way to track the emails and find this person, but I certainly don't have the resources or time. Other Sports Shooter's beware of scams like this one!

->> Wow, there sure are a lot of west Africans relying on sportsshooters to rescue them from rebels.

Perhaps we should nominate an ambassador to African nations to deal with these problems more closely.

->> This doesn't apply directly, but is somewhat similiar. Its probably the funniest web link someone has sent me in a long time.

419 Spam are the guys who write saying they are the son of King (fill in the blank) from Nigeria and they have 15 million dollars that they need to put into a foreign bank account. They will give you 10% of the money if
you will just give them your bank account #. It's called 419 because that's the number of the law against it in Nigeria.
