i've lobbied to the shooters at my paper, our competitors and local freelancers who haven't joined sportsshooter to join. most don't understand that ss isn't just for sports photographers (anymore), but is a growing community of exceptional photojournalists and budding amateurs.
it's unfortunate because there is a great pool of talented shooters here in northwest arkansas, as well as elsewhere in the state.

I've tried the same down here in Central Arkansas...I'm always talking about sportsshooter and one guy from Searcy joined after we talked about it. I get more than my $25 worth out of this site.
BTW, I'll be in NWA in a couple of weeks for the all-star games. Hope to see you there!

->> Yes, but would be really impressive is if you correlated these numbers to the to population of the states and gave us some percentage breakdowns!
State population of US -> SS members from that state
You might need to weed out those foreigners though :-D Or better yet, stick the Canadian provinces in the comaprison. Probably SOL with any sort of representation from Europe, Asia and Australia being any where near a representative sample.
You can snag all the US data from the US Census Bureau www.census.gov. I'm sure the same data is out there for Canada.
If you have some free cycles, this would be a great opportunity to learn some perl (www.perl.org) & (www.perl.com). Save off the 2 files, read them into hashes, cross reference the states in each list and the members v. US population and then generate some stats for each. Shouldn't be more than 30-40 lines of code(if you document well :) |

Anyway, in between actual work...here's the link to the extra compiled data: http://www.actionathletics.com/tmp/ss_pop.html
I had it as straight text with the PRE tags, but decided to put it in HTML. Took an extra 5 minutes :( 62 lines of total code, but that's because the Canadian's took up an 11 extra lines when I decided to include them! :-)
Now, don't ask for sorting by columns or anything, or I'll be forced to add that functionality!!!

Don't get me wrong, SS is a great resource and community, but seriously needs a modern web presence. But then I guess I shouldn't be surprised given the roots in the newspaper industry. |

->> Thomas, there's things that most definitely are broke, or at least outdated.
Just a few quick examples of things that could be improved include getting rid of the ability to hide how you mark a post; the guide needs a massive overhaul and update; more teaching tools; a section for newbies to ask questions without ridicule (that'd be where where anonymous would be a good thing); portfolio reviews by a select group of pros (at a cost, hey time is valuable!); the list could go on.
The message board here has a pretty bad reputation, on another board I used to post the words bitter and bicker were well used to describe the posts - I often read comment after comment about why NOT to join SS instead of suggesting it as a good place to come and be a part of the community. Would even suggest levels for photographers, probation of sorts, throw in some peer recommendations along with other criteria to move up the ladder. Guess that would mean opening the door a bit more to newbies instead of a closed community but of course can have sections only for the top tier(s), plus plenty here already.
All depends what the top guys want of course, they could close it right down to a very closed close knit group or open it up completely - personally like to see something in the middle but better. |
