| ->> I just got a 12-inch Powerbook4 and I'm trying to get all the essentail applications on it. I'm about to finish school and so I am not financially blessed. I was wondering if anyone knows where I can acquire a "cheap" Photo Mechanic (*wink*wink*) Thank you. |

->> It is better to pay for a full version, because that gives you free updates for a year or so. You might be able to get a version of 3.x from someone, but when Apple does system updates, youmay need an updated version of the software.
I know being a student is tough, but I recommend that you don't be cheap on software. |

BUY a copy of photo mechanic. The guys at Camera Bits work hard to create great software. Maybe you should look to support them instead of ripping them off. |

->> *wink*wink*???
Copying software for someone else is flat-out stealing. If you want to use Photo Mechanic, you need to buy the program. It's a wonderful piece of software that is put together by hard-working programmers. I'm not sure if they have an educational discount, but if you can't afford it, use a different piece of software. |

| ->> Slightly off topic, but does anyone else feel that 3.x was faster than the new 4.x version for Mac? The last version seemed to render thumbnails much quicker for me |

->> In my experience, 4 is faster than 3 at showing thubnails when you are reading off a harddrive, but it painfully bogs down reading off a CD or DVD compared to 3. My fast mac may be making a difference in 4 though. Also, when the cache in 4 builds up, the performance slows down. I delete the cache once in a while, and keep the preference set to empty the cache when quiting the program.
I think 4 is better in other ways too - I love being able to resize the thumbnails on the fly. If it could only preview .NEFs bigger and sharper! |

->> We just upgraded one of the G4s in the photo office to OS X 10.3, and the new version of Photo Mechanic.. Version 4 on OS X is *MUCH* slower than version 3 for OS 9. It looks like it's rebuilding thumbs or something like that, I'm not quite sure.
I prefer the performance of 3 on OS 9, but the new OS might have something to do with it. This mac is one of the older 466MHz G4-Digital Audio Macs. |

->> I think v4 appears slower due to all the thumbnail rebuilding. Also v4 doesn't use QuickTime so placeholders for movie files don't show-up to be double-clicked on. But the kind folks at CameraBits gave me a v3 serial number so i could still do that with the older version. Now if they could just make it read CMYK jpegs too....
Camera Bits does treat their customers well. Support them by buying their software. |

| ->> If you can't afford Photo Mechanic, you probably can't afford Photoshop. A good technique to get a free copy of Photoshop is to put on your running shoes and take a brick to the front window of a computer store. The money you save on Photoshop can be put towards purchasing a copy of Photo Mechanic. |

->> I recently got trial ver. 4.0.8.2 for the pc. I have never used a previous version but I find the thumbnail building very slow. I did call Camera Bits about the trial version and they told me that if I needed to extend the trial period they would be glad to extend it as needed. The folks at Camera Bits sound like they are good to work with.
Cheers....

->> Buy it Dude!!! It is a CHEAP program compared to all the others out there and it does a GREAT job..... I too find V4 and Panther is MUCH slower, I read that if you TRASH your preferences in the library folder it speeds up a little...maybe its time to get someone with a stop watch to clock it ( hehe ). I use it ( everyday ) I like it every day......
not really my 2cents, more like 2.9cents....... |

->> Ramin,
Just in case nobody has taken the time to explain it to you in an email, people are markign your posts as inappropriate for a couple of reasons.
1) People are very protective of their own copyrights; and find it hypocritical to violate any other copyrights (includign those of software developers) in the interests of saving a buck.
2) Many Editors, Senior Photographers, people that you or I might be working for or just interviewing with in the future. Any hint of impropriety on your part might be detrimental to your future. And, it makes the Sportsshooter.com community look bad. Please don't do this again. |

->> Ramin you have only been a member of this site for a couple of sort weeks so I am sure that many will cut you some slack.
Everybody in their life has had a brain fart or two. It happens, and hopefully people learn from it.
This site and the contributors to it work so hard at putting a value on people's work, so even hinting about what would boil down to pirating a copy of software is just not what this site is all about.
I think you are getting the point from some of the posts above and the "inappropriate" responses, so enough nagging.
Another thing to know is that these threads get listed on places like Google.com and they stay there a very long-time so Nick has made a very good point above. |

->> oh oops, I meant to say in point #2, that "Many Editors, Senior Photographers, people that you or I might be working for or just interviewing with in the future..." READ THIS SITE.
Forgive the mistake. This is why I am neither a writer nor a copy editor. ;) |

| ->> Everyone has a good points and I was wrong to make such a post and request. However, receiving lessons on morality from people who do not know you and you don't know is hard for anyone to take in. I WILL BUY PHOTO MECHANIC. Can we please drop it? I really would like to be part of this community. Coming back now and then and seeing such responses to my request that has been established as not being right is hard for me. I respect your responses. If I am not wanted please tell me, it would be hard to stay knowing no one has respect for. Thanks. |

Receiving criticism from your peers is much better than a hefty fine from a software developer or worse. Just take it as a warning. No one hates you here. |
