Program for contact sheets?

->> I'm looking for a program to make contact sheets of my digital photos, and ideally I'd like them to be about the size of a 35mm neg, and be able to have them spaced very close together on the sheet.
I have tried to do this with photoshop 5, (yes I'm still using a very old version) but was unable to get the thumbnails to be very close together, and didn't want to waste so much space.
Thanks in advance

I use BreezeBrowser for this when making proof sheets for clients. You can customize it to label the shots as desired. http://www.breezesys.com

->> I'd strongly reccomend the upgrade to photoshop CS. It handles contact sheets well and so many other great features. They used to have a 30 free download trial of the full version, I assume they still do.

| ->> I'm very happy w/ Photo Mechanic - you can specify how many previews to a page - what text information you want printed if any - etc etc - very good results - you can print them on a laser printer - or on a photo paper on glossy paper - they look very good. |

->> Eric,
Does the CS version allow you to set the spacing between photos on a contact sheet? I know that at least in my version you can't control that. |

->> You can choose how many columns and how many rows as well as resolution. Also you can choose to let PS rotate for best fit or leave images at their current orientation. I can send you a screenshot of the control panel if you like, just let me know an email addy.

->> Eric,
That sounds like the same controls PS 5 has. The only trouble is when I increase the number of columns and row, the size of the thumbnail gets smaller and the space between them stays the same. |

->> Ah, guess I didn't understand that at first. I dont think you have specific control over the between image spacing. Hopefully one of the other suggestions will handle that for you.

| ->> Jeff, if you uncheck the "use captions as filename" box at the bottom of the Contact sheet window, the photos will be closer together on the page. Putting 6 photos on a row will be real close to a strip of 35mm film...... |

->> Are you looking for something like this: http://www.actionathletics.com/aa_examples/contactsheet.html
I'm porting the script to perl so it will be more flexable and easily adapted to all of those 'other' OS's :-D It uses ImageMagick (http://www.imagemagick.org) as the backend processor.
Spacing between images(too a degree based on the tile structure of the thumbnails), background colors, placement of the title, font sizes, paper size (8x10, 8x12, 8.5x11), index name and extension, etc are all options that you can control.
I use the same program to create 35mm looking contactsheets as well as Medium Format looking ones. On my more recent ones, I've been setting the background color to black and the font to white (more like darkroom contacts) |

| ->> Jeff, we use ACDsee6, which lets you control the spacing between pix. And you can use headers, footers, etc. Hope this helps, Sam |

->> If you want real control and don't care if it's a manual process, just use MS word or Excel. You'll have to doe verything manually, but you'll get the finished result you want.
It's good for a sheet or two, but I wouldn't suggest it for much more than that. The time you spend may not be worth it.
You might also check out Thumbsplus from www.cerious.com . I use it, but don't remember if it does contact sheets or if they are customizable... I also don't have the program in front of me right now... (wrong computer). |

->> Jeff-
If you use a PC, try Irfanview:
http://www.irfanview.com
It's 100% free, you can control the size and spacing of the images, and you can have it automatically include any of the info attached to the image (anything from filenames and times to IPTC captions, to EXIF shooting data). I use it as my main image browser/batch captioner, and it's great to be able to spit out contact sheets with captions. Plus the price is right.
