EXIF/ITPC captioning

->> In regards to archiving and databases:
I've been using iView Media Pro for quite some time, and really love the setup I have. I use User Defined Fields (in the Annotations panel) for my commenting. I have several different catalogues (one for each series) each with their own (user defined) fields (year, series, track, class, team, driver, etc.). Here is a sample from one of my catalogues:
http://homepage.mac.com/tcorzett/motorsports.jpg

I chose (and prefer) this setup over keywords because I can quickly sort by the fields. What I don't like is that the information entered is stored in a catalogue rather than the EXIF/ITPC of the image itself. For those that use iView Media Pro, is there a way to get these User Defined Fields into the EXIF/ITPC of the image itself? Are there any programs (OSX) similar to iView, but that store the annotations (User Defined Fields) in the EXIF/ITPC of the image itself?

In regards to submitting commented/captioned images:
How do you typically comment/caption your images for submission? Do you typically do it (by hand) in Photoshop? Or do you do it with another program? Do you do it to all of your images, or do you do it to just the ones that are being submitted at that time?

Thank you all for the information!

->> Todd,

I've been using Iview for a few years and love it...so much better than Portfolio that my magazine uses.
I'm not really sure about getting stuff into the ITCP fields, I so use keywords exclusively.
When I do write captions, I use Photoshop and put them in the "file info" pallet.
If you find any better way or deals, I'd love to hear them.

->> Well it wasn't exactly what I wanted, but I did find a solution that will work for me. I really didn't want to have to go into Photoshop to enter my commenting, as all my stuff is done in iView. I started to write my own custom XMP panel for the 'File Info' pallet, but the captions entered there were only visible in Photoshop (and to people that have the custom XMP panel installed).

I did find a way to get the ITPC info changed in iView back into the files... Under the 'Action' menu is a spot for 'Synchronize...' where you can take the catalogue info and put it into the files. Unfortunately it doesn't synchronize the User Defined Fields. It will do all other ITPC fields (including Keywords). You can do batch keywords in iView (Action -> Annotations... -> Batch...) just make sure you enter them one at a time. iView assumes whatever you put into the field is one keyword (even if you put in ',' or ';' like in Photoshop).

I'm going to go with this, as I can do my User Defined Fields, then just select each group from that and batch keyword them. It only takes a few minutes longer than my old workflow, and all the info is stored in the keywords (and viewable in applications other than iView or Photoshop). It also gets me into the good habit of properly documenting each file incase I ever need to switch from iView.

->> Look at Photo Mechanic, both on Mac and PC. The Mac version just received an overhaul but I haven't fiddled with it. It's a great tool for quickly captioning images and includes a "template" feature which is great for things like your name, track, event name, etc. PM can easily export any of the IPTC fields into a flat file, XML, etc. for use in other applications.
