->> What kind of hat do you use to keep your face and neck from getting torched? I am looking for something that will allow me to keep shooting without having to take it off and keep my face and neck from getting torched.
Thanks,
Kev |

->> I used to use a regular baseball cap and turn it around when I was shooting but always found my face and ears getting burnt anyway. The best solution to date has been my SportsShooter bucket hat. Yes I know the SportsShooter bucket hat is no longer available in the SS.com store... however the bucket hat still lives and can be found at lots of sporting goods or fishing supply stores.
What's great is that is has a rim around the entire hat that covers a healthy part of my neck and ears. The lip is flexible so that I can get my eye up to the camera without adjusting the hat as it fits over the hot shoe or I can flip the lip up if I have a flash on the camera.
The bucket hat is the best shooting hat I've ever owned. I can't believe I haven't stumbled upon it sooner.

->> Hmmmm...perhaps we need our fine friends to develop the SS bandana (HINT!!)...thus you can put the bandana under your SS ballcap to drape over the back...a kind of "mullet" look.
Geez, this could almost double as the prerequisite towell to have in your pack. I need to talk to someone in Marketing over at the motherland of SS ;) We gotta get these merchandise ideas going. |

->> I shoot in some real hot weather where I'm required to wear a cowboy hat. It does a decent job of keeping the direct sunlight off, but it's the reflected light that burns my lips and eyes after several hours.
I keep an Outdoor Research baseball cap with a bit longer bill stored in the front pocket on my camera case for emergencies, but it only shades my eyes. In intense sunlight it doesn't cut it.
I also have and use Australian bush hats, a booney hat, one of those safari-type baseball hats with the neck cover, and a drover style hat. They're all ok.
I like looking at REI, because they have a great selection of hats for sun protection.

Also, wear the best sunblock (highest SPF factor) you can. That reflected light will be slowed by the sunblock.
And, remember to keep drinking water. |

Thank for all the tips!

->> Kevin, the hat I am wearing in my icon image was originally intended for the purpose you’re inquiring but has since become somewhat of a trademark of mine being that I’ve shot with it in the sunny months for the last 5 years. The very first one I purchased was in Corpus Christy, TX while on a two month trip across the United States. It cost $28. After washing it, only to find that that brim no longer held its firmness, I found another one while searching through a catalog waiting for my friends to sober up at a frat party later that summer. The catalog is produced by Alpha Shirt Company, who traditionally sells wholsesale clothes and other goods for embroidery. I ordered one and haven’t looked back since. Because the brim does soften when it’s washed, and because they only cost about $3.60 each I bought 23 of them. When it becomes so dirty and smelly that I can’t stand it any more I just toss it and get a new one. The best thing about the hat is that it is far better than then $28 one I originally bought, it comes in Olive, Blue and White, and it’s very strong. It also has a chin strap that I use when the wind is blowing like crazy and I’ve also worn it when it’s not quite raining but drizzling enough to be a problem. People often confuse it with the famous “Tilley” hat that is made of the same material but cost $89 because some famous guy designed it and it has a lifetime warranty. You can find Alpha Shirt Company on the net.
Hope that helps!!!

->> My husband wears a porkpie hat. I love it. It keeps the sun off his face and neck and he looks great in it. It is so old and still looks new. Plus, the very first time I set eyes on him he was wearing that hat and a vest. OO la la.Me, I hate hats-they make me sweat and give me hat hair! Everyday when I am leaving he says to me-"where's your hat." Women SS-what kinds of hats do you wear?
I love the hat Justin is wearing too-very sexy!

->> This post only applies to women, and to men who are secure in their sexuality :)
I buy the stretchy neoprene visors, the kind the women's softball teams use, for like, four bucks from a sporting goods store, then cut a slit about 2/3 of the way up the middle of the front. No hat hair, and the slit accomodates the camera. The noeprene is just stiff enough to keep it's shape despite the slit, and just flexible enough for vertical shooting. |

->> Chris and Alan are right, the Tilley Hat rules. Very versatile, protects you in all ways, and flexible so you don't knock it off with the camera. Washable, and comes with a cord to hook under your chin on windy days or tuck in when not needed. Standard among many in the motion picture industry.
Only guys like Andy Mac can get away with bucket hats and not look old (just add wraparounds and colored socks with your sandals) or stupid. Seriously. |

->> My kids keep calling me Gilligan when I wear my hat. It's just a plain bucket hat with a brim and a chinstrap. The chinstrap is necessary, and I like the brim to be flexible because when shooting with a flash, the brim folds up and out of the way. I had one just like it for a year or so, and my youngest son took it to "Goofy Hat Day" at his school, and it just never returned. :(
I used to worry what people thought, but after a couple weekends with severely burnt ears, I really stopped caring.. Use lots of sunscreen for the rest of your bod. |

Of course, you could always try a sumbrero! |
