Slashdot says the 8GB card will cost $6000. Frankly I'd rather have a 1D Mark II, a 550ex, a 24mm f/1.4, a 512mb card, and an extra battery for the same money, but this might be useful to someone.

| ->> Judas, that is a lot of capacity. But I am with you, I'd rather have equipment and a bunch of smaller cards then one gigantic card. I'd also worry about the whole single point of failure thing as well. |

->> My guess is that in 5 years, that will be the same as a 512 MB card today.
Think about it. Remember the first 20 MB hard drives? I do. |

->> :-) Hard drives? It was nice NOT to have to boot off of your disk! :)
In any case, six grand is a bit out of control for simple storage right now. But you're right, the photogs in 5 -10 years will be wondering how we were able to take pictures with 512 MB and 1GB cards. I mean, that just one picture on the zillion megapixel setting.

| ->> Speaking of that, won't it be fun to reread some of these posts in ten years? I hope the SS guys will archive all of the posts and have a way for us to read them (at least the good ones). By then we will probably access the internet through a chip in our brain or something. |

| ->> I lost an entire MNF game (yes, with overtime) because of CF card failure. I will never shoot an entire game on one card again. Even filling a 1GB card makes me nervous now. |

->> I'm guessing that in some specialty applications, an 8GB card makes sense. I don't, however, expect to seem them on the sidelines for at least a few years.

Booting from floppy? You *had* a floppy drive? I had to load my OS from an accoustic coupled cassette tape! |

->> Debbie-
I used to have a set of 384mb cards, but I had to give them back when I changed jobs. In some respects they're the perfect size. If I left some breathing room (a good idea for emergencies anyway), 2 cards fit perfectly on a CD. I wonder if they still sell them and if they're any cheaper than the 512mb ones...
I could see using the 8GB cards in remotes. The other night I shot 2 hockey games back to back at the Fleet Center. I didn't set up any remotes, but if I had (especially up in the rafters) it would have been cool to shoot 2 games straight without worrying about the remote filling its card. For $6000 a pop though, I'll hike up there and dump it every so often. :-)

| ->> The rep at PMA said he wasn't completely sure, but he thought the 8G card would run about $2200-$2400 on the street. |

| ->> Why don't they just make 700mb cards to transfer over to a CD? Or would that be too simple? |
