Maybe, just maybe NPPA is turning around

->> I went to look at the JIB today and on the front page is a little link about members being able to buy stuff at reduced prices. They have books, digital gear, etc. They have photo mechanic listed at $145 for nonmembers and $130 for members, Photo Rescue at $39 list and $27 for nppa members. Some little savings are better than nothing I think. I'm glad to see they are trying to give members some benefits for their membership fee. They had the reduced prices on rental cars etc for a while but with the number of photo gear items they have on the site, I think this a bit more significant change. It's a small change granted but I think that with having members numbering in the thousands that they could make some deals with companies who want to get photographers business. Lets hope that this continues. :)

->> I think that the legwork involved in getting lowepro, delkin and some of the other manufacturers on board is going to help them keep members. I was kind of saddened when I saw that they would be putting a moratorium on the best of 2004 book but times are hard, money is tight and we still get the pictures. The new site is also a real blessing. I think it looks great.

->> Not to take anything away of the NPPA, but if your a member of sportsshooter.com you get a discount for PhotoMechanic also.

To bad you couldn't get two discount if you are members of both!

->> Robert brings up a good point... but is there a place where all these little special things we are entitled to are listed?

We see mention of some from time to time but I have yet to see them listed in anyone place. I did a search but didn't come up with anything quickly.

->> The store and special offers pages (URLs below)will show you the discounts available to NPPA members. I would agree that a text list would also be good.

->> If alienating long - time sponsors by doing this commercial site is "turning it around" I guess you're right.

But it seems to me that making a few pennies selling what they have on their sales web page is not enough to compensate for the ill-will created with regards to the many loyal sponsors that have trekked around the country on the Short Course and the annual convention and given the organization support, not to mention thousands of dollars over the years.

It looks like yet another classic case of a decision made not looking at the long-term affect it has and what affect it has on others outside of that close circle of the EC ...

Just my .02.

I hope they make a million. I really do.

The Kahuna.

->> This is sort of a tangent, but I wish I had known of the NPPA when I was a high school student.

Photojournalism programs could do themselves a huge favor by marketing their program by sponsoring NewsPhotographer subscriptions to high schools that are turning out good photojournalists.

I chose my first college based on scholarship and not based on whether it would prepare me suitably for the profession I was most interested in. It was two years before I got the advice to transfer somewhere else.
