->> Maybe I'm being overly sensitive but after having a half dozen or so people email me about how to break into my particular area (movie stills)and me taking the time to write back with some observations & advise, doesn't it seem right that those same people would at least acknowledge my response? .......Or maybe not.

->> I agree with you, Chris. Miracle looks like it's going to be quite a success. Congrats on your great work. I might actually ask you some questions about that field sometime soon. I've always wondered about still photography on movie sets.

A friend of mine had asked me if I would be interested in doing some work on a couple of indie films she was involved with in NYC last year. I couldn't do it at the time, but I'd definitely like to learn more about it.

->> I too agree with you Chris. I've had people email me through my member page asking for things as simple as camera settings for some of the images that I had posted on my page at the time, or who to contact/how to get in to shoot sporting events I've covered. Like you, I replied, never to hear from them again.

It's the ones who can't be bothered to say 'Thanks' that give you pause for thought the next time one of those emails comes along: It makes you wonder, "Why should I bother?"

Of course we have to bother because we all have something to learn from someone about something, and most of us _do_ take the time to acknowledge the help.

Either that, or maybe it's simply because I've actually been to Okotoks, and I have some innate sympathy for you ;-)

By the way, I spent a couple of nights in Okotoks back in '93 and as far as small towns go, it's not bad.

->> While I agree with you about the disappointment, I also believe you must continue to help the next person the same as the first one.

Maybe from my posts about giving out awards for message board posts people think we should get credit for our help. Well I think rewards would be a formal thanks from our colleagues. But this shouldn’t be what motivates us.

Back to your point, photographers need to do a better job as a group being courteous and less inwardly focused. In the day and age when manners are almost no longer practiced, we should surely shine if we practiced them.

We are not each other’s competition. We are each other’s support. Abuse this relationship and people will be less likely to go out of their way to help you in the future.

To do our jobs we must build relationships. Good photographs cannot be made without access and your fellow photographers can help you gain access to venues or they can let the SID’s know not to let you in a venue.

Keep returning the emails with your helpful comments. Your reputation as one who gives will be rewarded as your career moves forward.

I'm a guy that e mailed you about access at Ricoh Coliseum, if I didn't reply back with a 'Thanks', my bad. If I did reply, thanks again.

I agree with you Chris, I was one of those guys that thought about e mailing you but I figured when this whole site saw your amazing images, a lot would be contacting you. You are in a unique position that us photographers are always looking for. Good on ya!
Now, I'm in Toronto: Hollywood North, any tips? Just kidding.

Great work.

John

I was likely the first guy to inquire about your profession. I don't think I emailed you back, but I want to thank you for your response. I was more curious and intrigued about what you did than serious about persuing it. I apologize for not thanking you earlier.

nice spread in SI!

I totally hear what you're saying about acknowledging help and saying "thank you"... it is common courtesy and when it is said genuinely it really lets people know what they did was appreciated and taken to heart.

On a personal level:

At the NPPA Short course in Cleveland, I was one of the last three portfolio reviews, and Robert Scheer of the Indy Star critiqued my portfolio at 12:30 in the morning... I don't think he had even eaten dinner yet. And he didn't just look at it and say good/bad... he talked with me about my work and my future with all the zest he had for the profession. He gave me his time and his insight... two things that I know are extremely valuable to pros. I thanked him profusely afterwards... and I still didn't feel like saying thanks was adequate. So Bob, if you're reading this... thanks again (and again... and again...)!

There are so many professionals out there that lend out a helping hand to other shooters and especially students, and they always deserve our thanks.

my 2 cents,
--MK

Those sound so much better to me than getting a reply saying my advice was off base and useless to them. ;)

Small world.
