File names with two cameras
Bob Ford, Photographer

->> I just recently started shooting with 2 bodies and for the first time this morning when transferring files into a folder there were duplicate file names.

How do others avoid this? Can you set the D2Hs to use different naming conventions? Like set one to name the photos DSC_XXXX and the other IMG_XXX?

Normally the first thing I do is transfer all pictures from the card(s) onto a server into a folder named for the event. Then view and edit from that folder.

Any advice would be helpful.

->> Each event is in it's own seperate folder on the server. For example, last night I shot Northwestern Lehigh at Northern Lehigh boys basketball. That folder is named "1-29-04 NWNLBBB".

The photos that I put into the system are resaved in that folder with their new names, and the others remain named the original name.

->> Label your event folder. Then download each card into that folder...name one "long glass" and the other "short glass". They won't overlap and it might help you remember which pics are in which folder. Of course, if you are using more than one card per body that won't work. In the case of basketball...you might consider making a "first half" folder and a "second half" folder to download cards into. It's a quick way to keep track of what part of the game you shot a particular photo. I do quarter photos within each Packer game folder I do to keep things straight. Just a thought...cheers...Dan.

->> I make one folder on the desktop for the event and name the contents Card 1, Card 2, etc. I only rename photos when I "save as" after toning in Photoshop and then I still include the original file number with the new name. So within the Card 1 folder is the complete set of untouched photos and a file folder named either "favorites" or "best of" and the set of renamed toned photos.

When using two cameras I make the main event folder’s name reflect what camera the card came out of.

->> Or if you're using a Mac, Image Capture will avoid this problem by renaming the files automatically. You'll end up with a "IMG_2331.JPG" and an "IMG_2331 1.JPG", but Photo Mechanic's ability to sort by capture time keeps this from being an issue. PM's Ingest Disk feature will do basically the same thing, but will add an A, B, or C to the end of the file name to keep it distinct.

->> Bob,

I have two D1H's and I have the file sequence option ON so it names my files DSC_0001.JPG through DSC_9999.JPG. What I decided to do was to suffer through the same file names until the cameras started naming images DSC_5000.JPG. Then you simply reset only one of your cameras and it will start back at DSC_0001.JPG It is unlikely that you will ever overlap being 5000 numbers away from each other. You could also just reset one of the cameras now and they should be far enough apart.

It's worked good for me.

If this is too confusing, give me a call.

->> That's fairly similar to what I'm doing, though my cameras are out of sync because I got them at different times rather than by delibrately making it so. My renaming script (which puts the date on the beginning of the filename) would handle duplicate names on the same day by just adding a serial digit into the name. However, my cameras are far enough out of sync numerically that I haven't run into this problem.

It works fine for me. And I don't have to consciously think about it, which I consider to be a good thing.

->> As Mongo stated in his post Nikon View is the simplest way to download and rename at the same time.

I've been using it for the past year. I give all my images a prefix number which is the Julian date a dash and then tell it to number each image as it is downloaded e.g. 4030-xxxx.

I've even had three different shooters download and the only change we make is to put the shooters initials after the Julian date e.g. 4030-ws-xxxx. The operation is seamless and does not slow down the download that I've noticed. Setup for each day takes about 2 minutes or less.

As for folders we use the Julian date as the folder name which is also the name on the CD when it is burned.

->> I use a program called "Magic File Renamer" (http://mfr.queryweb.com/) that will batch rename files using different specs. I dump all mine into one folder (I shoot a 1D & 10D so the files are e82cXXXX.jpg & imgXXXX.jpg) and batch rename them inserting a description as well as the date & time the photo was taking at the beginning of the filename. This gives me a file like laguna_seca_04.12.03_03.14.45_e82cXXXX.jpg and has the added benefit of putting the photos taken from each camera in the order you took them, assuming your cameras clocks are properly set.

For you you would have to put the files in different folders but once renamed they can be in the same folder since none of them would have the same time stamp. If necessary, once you do the first rename you can always rename them again with just a generic filename and then rename the other folder starting at the number you left off of in the first folder.

->> If you use the Nikon View software and when you download use the transfer software, it will rename and when you put the next card in it will then continue where you left off. You can also name each camera differently in the Image Comment box. This way if you need to identify a camera having a problem, like dust, you can see this in the photoshop file info box fields.

->> I use a freeware program for the PC called AF5 Rename Your Files. http://www.fauland.com/

You can do all the following.
Add a prefix or suffix to your filenames
Replace a string in your filenames
Cut characters from your filenames
Change the extension of your files
Convert your filenames to uppercase, lowercase, first letter uppercase, ...
Add a counter to your filenames (file01.dat, file02.dat, file03.dat, ...)
Add a file attribute (creation date, file size, ...) to your filenames

I have always stated my folder names for my jobs with this format. (020504 Job Name) Buy using 02 for Feb you will always have them listed in order. So when you archive several job to DVD lets say, they will stay in order.

Here is a sample file name, 6F7E3288.tif, I rename it 020504-3288.tif using the software. I always try to keep the last four digits the same as the camera number.

This program of your seems to do the same thing and it's free. I haven't tried it yet but if it works like it should I would recommend it.

->> Well, Rattlers season started yesterday so I finally had a batch of photos to work with. I tried the "AF5 Rename" utility and while it is slightly eaiser to use I encountered two problems that will make me not use it.

1. I hit the ADD button to add all 700+ files to the list for a renaming operation and they wouldn't load. If I added them 50-100 at a time there was no problem.
2. Adding the Time/Date function adds the CURRENT time and date to the filename. That's worthless. I want the time/date the photo was taken in the filename so they can be sorted properly.

So, for those two reasons I'll stick with Picture Information Extractor and, when needed, Magic File Renamer.

->> Nikon Transfer in Nikon View 6.1, the newest version, will name the files by shooting date and time, and append a trailing number if there is a naming conflict. (V6.0 would use current date and time, which was pretty useless.)

You can also set an option to synchronise your camera's date and time to your computer when you connect, which takes care of the problems of making sure your times are set exactly and Daylight Savings Time, which the camera does not adjust by itself.
