question for AP staffers / stringers...
George Olivar, Photographer
New Brunswick | NJ | USA | Posted: 2:44 AM on 01.25.04
->> I was wondering if AP photographers use a specific, proprietary program for captioning and transmitting their pictures. When you pull pictures off the wire, they have a standard set of info fields; does that mean that there is a program that the AP has created with these fields built in?

I normally use Transmit and its IPTC fields for filing pictures, but I wasn't sure what the AP does.

->> George-

Photoshop has all of the necessary fields for captioning AP photos. If you're looking for freeware and have a PC, IrfanView does as well.

->> George,
I use Photo Mechanics and you can set-up your fields to automaticly fill in all the nessary fields. I use a general one on all the photos and then use the file info in photoshop to change anything before sending the photo. I use Transmit or FTP to send the photos.

->> George,
You can use any program that allows you to fill in all of the standard IPTC fields. AP does require that all of the fields be filled out according to their style,but any software will do.

->> I use photoshop it has all the fields you will need. In photoshop you can create an "action" which will do most of the work for you with a single key stroke. I use it for both Getty and AP and it works like a champ.

Try these three files for caption writing AP style.

The information refers to Photoshop 5.5 which is the international standard for header information. Some of the older systems being used outside North America cannot handle the changes in header placement in Photoshop 6 and above. Especially CS with new xml inclusions.

The information is almost the same for newer versions.

->> While PhotoShop does the job, it does re-jpeg an image. Nikon View doesn't re-jpeg the image when you use the IPTC fields.

There are a few other programs, which also allow you to write in the IPTC fields without have the software re-jpeg. Maybe some others can tell us their results.

If you need to crop and do some image manipulation on most of your photos, then this is a mute point.

My understanding is that Photoshop CS does not open the image to caption, unlike previous versions.
