LOUDEST ARENA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

->> Just recently shot the Oklahoma State/Oklahoma Game at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, OK. I have to say this is the loudest Arena I have ever been in. I have not been shooting that long but the crowd was definitely a big part of the game. The Arena is designed so that all the noise is shot strait to the floor. Usually I am able to just put the noise in the back of my mind and concentrate on shooting.
I have to say at this game there were two problems:
1) The crowd took my concentration away since my body was vibrating
2) I found myself making the same sounds as the crowd as the game went on.
(not sure if i was getting into the game or if the vibrations were forcing it out of me)
Next Big game I shoot at Gallagher-Iba Arena I will have a set of ear plugs with me. I have shot games when OSU played a small school and nothing like the OU game.
My Questions to everyone is:
1)What is the Loudest Arena/Stadium you have ever shot in?
2) Has the Crowd (noise level) every made it more difficult to concentrate on shooting?
Since I am somewhat new to the Collage level of sport shooting I figure it will become nothing to have the crowd so loud in the future.
Just curious about others experiences?

->> It has to be Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky. I have been to several arena's and this place is loud and proud. 24,000 people indoors screaming for the Kentucky Wildcats. I have been shooting 25 years and went to Rupp for the first time a couple of weeks ago. If you have never been its the Holy Gral of Basketball Arena's and plenty loud.
This would have to be the loudest place I have ever been in.
1. Rupp Arena - Lexington - Kentucky Basketball
2. The Coliseum - Nashville - Tennessee Titans |

->> Allen Fieldhouse - University of Kansas
When they fill nearly half the arena with rabid KU students for the Missouri-Kansas game... prepare to not hear your camera fire (even a DCS 520!)... You might feel it fire... but even if you try to hear it, you can't!
As for vibrations... It's always fun to shoot on the visitor's bench side at the Hearnes Center at the University of Missouri. It's right in front of a large section of students known as the "zou crew"... They love to jump up and down... only problem is, they're on the same piece of floor you are... so you end up bouncing up and down too! Not fun! And they're pretty loud too. |

For college football, it HAS to be LSU's Death Valley. Anyone else cause a seismic reading?????
For NHL hockey, the loudest experience I've ever had was at a Avalanche game.
Haven't attended enough NFL or NBA games to judge. |

->> Riley Center... Olean NY... home of the St. Bonaventure Bonnies..... it only holds 6,000 fans, but the accustics in the place are designed for the sound to keep bouncing around, increasing the volume.... not that they have had much to cheer about lately
also listed as one of the top 5 hardest places (college Bball) for a road team to play. |

->> Three Words ... Cameron Indoor Stadium
The court is surrounded by students on all sides with the paying ticket holders seated above the students. And if you did not know, it only holds a few over 9,000 people (with about 1500-1600 of them being students ... record is 1900 students). The students regularly make the TV cameras shake and when they are 'on,' you can hear them from Main West. |

But, this past Thursday night I was at the Louisville/East Carolina game in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. At the end of the game I had a 5 hour drive home. My ears stopped ringing about 3 1/2 hours after the game was over. Plus I had a bit of a headache.
Minges only holds 8,000. It is really loud. |

->> bud walton arena in fayetteville does get loud. the arena hasn't filled up to capacity this season since the hogs have pretty much sucked on the court. yesterday's game against ole miss was the loudest it's been this year (it was the hogs' first conference win of the season). even at 3/4 capacity it does get loud at courtside though. it's gonna be at least next year before the razorbacks are an ncaa contender.
i'll be at Rupp Arena next month for arkansas' game against kentucky and will get to see how loud neil says it is.

The HP center in San Jose, a playoff game the Sharks played a few years ago agaist I think, the Blues. There was an early goal and the place was literally shaking for 10+ minutes.
The Oakland Coliseum when sold out for Baseball (Yanks, playoffs 2000 specifically) or Raiders (Broncs particularly)
There's the Oakland centric view. I'll put in a word for any of the ACC big time arenas also. MD, Duke or UNC, but I only have experience with UMD |

->> Well---
I have about 95% hearing loss, so I would have to disagree with Mark and Marc about Bud Walton Arena, yeah, it does get loud there but it's not as loud this year since Nolan Richardson was fired.
Yeah, I can't hear anything except for jet engines, trains, but I could actually hear LSU's Tiger Stadium, I thought i had my hearing back, other than that... War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock is pretty loud too--- they have a reason to--- Razorback football has been undefeated in "The Rock" for 6 straight years or since Houston Nutt became the coach.
We're hosting BCS champion LSU at War Memorial and I'll let you guys know if my hearing has come back for that game. |

It seats like 600 (I doubt it's ever been full), but I can still hear the cheerleaders screeching "hey hey maroon and gold; you satisfy my soul" and "Are you ready to throw down, YES WE ARE. ->> I guess it depends on whether we're talking crowd noise or insufferable public address system. My own personal experience says that Edison International Field in Anaheim, at least during the 2002 World Series, has the loudest, most annoying sound system on Earth. And the "thundersticks" didn't make it any better.
But then, I've never been in the Metrodome -- I'm told that shooting there is like receiving a postcard from hell. |

->> The Superdome during the Saints' first game back after Katrina and during the NFC Championship against Minnesota were the two loudest domed games I've ever photographed. I possibly damaged my hearing because there were points where the yelling was so loud I was hearing a static fuzz. To communicate with the people I was shooting we had to scream in to each other's ears and even then you sort of had to assume certain words.
For outdoor venues, I tip my hat to Qwest Field as well. There were accusations that they were piping in sound but a large part of it has to do with the shape of the seating bowl and the canopy channeling sound like a megaphone. |

->> Hands down, The Superdome, for the two games you mentioned Thomas, I was there as a fan and had to yell into my date's ear for her to hear me, greatest game I ever attended as a fan. The NFC Championship was nearly as loud this time I was a shooter on the field I know I have damaged hearing from a few of those Saints games.
Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge for LSU Football is the loudest outdoor venue I experienced and that was several years ago when Nick Saban returned as the Alabama head coach for the first time in Baton Rouge it was loud! |

->> I'm with Rob, though I wasn't at the 1991 NHL All-Star gameā¦I went to plenty of other Blackhawks games at the Chicago Stadium. The Madhouse would quite literally rock when the Blackhawks scored, between the screaming crowd and the old Kahlenberg boat horn.
Plus, the organ was actually built into the walls, so when it played, the entire stadium functioned as a gigantic speaker.

"At one event when Al was on duty at the console, a riot broke out caused by an unpopular decision following a boxing match. Al threw on all the stops and played a rousing version of the National Anthem which helped quell the rioters and also shattered light bulbs and windows in the cavernous stadium. Expecting dismissal because of the damage, Al was instead rewarded with the promise of a lifetime position." |

->> College, I'd agree with Rupp. I've only been there once, and I was amazed. Nothing in Indiana comes close, and the locals are as basketball nuts as anybody.
Pro (outdoor), Arrowhead Stadium. I've been inside most of the NFL stadiums, and Arrowhead puts out a stupid amount of noise, and they haven't been very good lately. Others: Gillette gets the HM.
Pro (indoor), Old RCA Dome in Indianapolis, but only if it's a big game. Normally, not too loud, but when someone like the Patriots were in town, in the playoffs, all the noise bounced off the roof of the dome and onto my ear drums. The new Lucas Oil Stadium, open or closed, isn't even in the conversation. |
