Image Capture and RAW files on Mac...

->> I am experimenting with using RAW files from my 1D and using C1 to color correct. I have discovered the following: In the past (using JPEG) I would pop the card in the Mac and use Image Capture to select and move the images to the hard drive. It gives me thumbnails and makes it easy to make sure I am downloading what I think I am. What I discovered is that Image Capture does something strange with the RAW files. When looking at the images in C1, it does not see them as RAW files. The file size of the images is also much smaller than if I just drag the images to the hard drive. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there something better to use to download the images? I guess I'm just a creature of habit and have been using Image Capture so long I never checked what else is available....ideas? (I know I can just drag and drop, but I like the preview I can get when using Image Capture.)
Thanks in advance for the ideas! |

->> Jeff,
Use Photo Mechanics Pro and get the Adobe Raw jpeg2000 plug in for photoshop. You can view your images and then make adjustments in photoshop on your raw files. |

| ->> Jeff: You probably already know this - but just incase you don't - you can set the preferences in Image Capture to launch Photo Mechanic (or anyother image browser) when the computer detects a CF card or camera - so the process of importing your images is seemless. |

->> Hi Jeff,
Hopefully you haven't cleared the CF cards yet. The fact that your file size is smaller with IC than if you just copy them in the finder in indicative of a problem with IC. I believe IC (by default at least) copies only the preview of the RAW, so you should re-copy the files via the finder.
I experimented with IC and decided I preferred simply transferring everything via the finder and then doing my editing. FYI, my workflow is to rename the folder on the CF card, then drag it to the HD. Then, the first thing I do when I load a CF card in the camera is look for images. If I see some, it means this card hasn't been transferred to the computer yet (since renaming the folder makes the images "invisible" to the camera). If I see none, I format the card in-camera and fire away.
Hope something in here is informative.

->> Thanks for the good advice everyone. I now have a new workflow using IC to open PhotoMechanic. (And Patrick, I was just testing, so no RAW files were lost....I 've learned to test a LOT before making a radical change in our workflow.)
Thanks again! Just one more reason this place is worth MUCH more than the yearly membership! |
