->> Today Adobe posted a 30 day trial version of Photoshop CS on apple.com if anyone wants to try it out. Some of the photographer specific functions I like:
-MUCH improved browser... I can ALMOST get rid of photo mechanic
-Raw support built in, more menus available in 16 bit mode
-Highlights/Shadows menu
-color match
There are a lot more features that have been upgraded, not to mention it runs in Panther on OSX. This is no small upgrade in my opinion.

(its a 240 MB download!!!) |

->> Did you see the photographic filters menu? warming up or cooling down your images has just become child's play.
I am very pleased with CS and think that it would be a good idea to check it out no matter if you are a 7.01 guru or if the paper won't pony up the dough to upgrade from 5.0 seeing all the new features is always interesting. |

->> Highlights/Shadows is AWESOME. I hope it gets rid of a lot of the photos from football where faces of African-American players are dodged until they look like Michael Jackson; maybe it's because I know how it's done...but it just looked soooo unnatural before. Now with the Highlights/Shadows menu it looks completely natural...
Raw support is excellent. Seems fast and very responsive, and very intuitive (until I saw the ADVANCED features). |

->> I just put it on my machine in the lest few days. I was able to shoot some RAW photos for the first time. Still doubt I will shoot RAW on a regular basis but was nice to see it implemented so nice. Hadn't check out the Highlights/Shadows feature yet (thanks for the tip Delane).
I do find the browser to be much improved. I hadn't really sat down to do much hardcore work within it yet other than to check to see if my extensive plug-in collection and actions continue to work. So far so good for me in that respect. |

| ->> Has anyone used the new Crop and Straighten feature? I'm a little confused as to its purpose. At first I thought, "Cool! Something to automatically level horizons." But it seems to just splice up my photos and make multiple, little copies. Any ideas? |

->> In a previous thread, Tom mentioned that you can upgrade to CS for free as long as you have any previous version of photoshop - VERY COOL.
I just picked up the education version and wow - very nice. It's a wicked little program, and I can't wait to get my camera back from Canon Service (again) to try out the RAW file editing. |

| ->> I just used the crop and straighten function last night actually. I was scanning in about 60 images from a flatbed. You can lay as many photos as you want on the scanner and it automatically recognize the photos, crop each one individually, and trim the excess. I also set up the action to run auto color on it and save to another folder.....makes life MUCH easier for the rare occasion I need to break out the flatbed. |

->> Jamie...thats not correct. You can't upgrade for free. That totally defeats the purpose, and we know that Adobe isn't going to GIVE AWAY a $179 upgrade.
From the Adobe Website:
To install upgrade successfully, you will need a licensed version of Photoshop 7.0 or earlier on the same platform as this purchase.
NOTE: Upgrade does not apply to Photoshop Elements, Photoshop Album, Photoshop Limited Edition, or PhotoDeluxe licensed users.

| ->> So if I were to download this demo version, install it, run it for the 30 days, then decide not to buy it would I have to completely delete it and my Photoshop 7 and then reinstall 7 or just delete the demo folders/files? |

->> Bruce,
usually companies will build a hidden bit that is installed into the computer with the program that will not allow you to demo it more than once no matter what. I do not remeber is adobe is this way or not (I know dreamweaver is) but I would guess that they are. The software is just too expensive to give away for free to people who are willing to load a new copy every month. |

| ->> Version 7 functions perfectly and independently. You will need to move (or duplicate) your third party plugins and actions but I have had no problems running them in CS. I just remembered that I hadn't tried some of my third party stuff in 16 bit mode yet but with XMAS on the horizon It may not happen until I do some RAW shots over the Holidays. |

->> Ah ha - thanks for catching that Delane.
"Here is another interesting thing that some shooters do not know about. As long as you have any licensed copy of Photoshop that being 3, 4 or whatever version you have you can upgrade straight to Photoshop CS directly at no extra charge. You do have to call a 1-800 number to get the unlock code to jump from 4 to CS but it can be done.
As well you can jump to the full Creative Suite which includes all the graphics programs that make you a desktop publisher if you have any licensed copy of Photoshop. "
I read that one wrong. Sorry everyone - it does cost money, but it's from any version to CS, not just 7 to CS. My mistake!
Actually - I'm only just starting to look at CS, so far I really like it - other then the improved file browser and direct from camera RAW editing, has anyone else found any features on it they think are really improved over photoshop 7??? |

->> Mr. Rouse is correct you do have to pay for the upgrade. I double checked that thread you mentioned Jamie, http://www.sportsshooter.com/message_display.html?tid=5997 had to see if I told people it was free. Yikes......... luckily I did not, I would hate to build up those "inappropriate" numbers!!
The information I have been given is that you can upgrade from any old "licensed" version of Photoshop to the full Creative Suite set or to just the Photoshop. Adobe is using Photoshop as a gateway to get people into their new fully integrated desktop publishing software, that being Creative Suite.
The demo that I was at a few weeks ago had the crowd doing a lot of "oooooooooohs" and "aaaaaaaaaawes" from graphics people and shooters alike. |

->> In case anyone missed the earlier post, you can get a full version of CS for $299 if you have Photoshop Elements (2.0 I think). Offer valid til the end of June. It mentions the Microtek scanner bundle, but the Elements that came with my 10D worked no problem.
Cheers,
Ross |
