D2H orientation sensor

->> I'm trying to read D2H images directly from a PCMCIA adapter, but neither Photoshop, FotoStation, nor Windows Explorer seem to rotate vertical images automatically.
I'm sure it'll work fine if I use the Nikon software to download images, but I still prefer to use a CF card reader.
Do we need a special utility that will alter the EXIF header or image to get this to work? |

Does the D2H write a field in the EXIF to tell the orientation the image was made in? |

->> It looks like there are utilities that will do loseless rotations based on the EXIF orientation header. I'm curious why it's not done automatically in common graphic utilities.

->> Stanley,
Which version of Photoshop are you using? In Photoshop CS, It will auto-rotate the image when you open it (but it will not display the thumbnail rotated in the File Browser). Of course Nikon View/Capture will also rotate automatically when you open images or transfer them. also - you can use the Nikon Transfer software to transfer images from the CF card. That's what I do so I can add an IPTC comment to the batch easily (and it also rotates them). I'm using XP and whenever I put a CF card in the reader, Nikon Transfer pops up...
Can't remember how I did that, but if you're interested, I'll try to figure it out. |

Does PS CS, rotate the image or just display it orientated properly?

->> Well, it will display it properly, then you can save the image. If you have any sort of batch processing you do which involves opening the pic and saving it, then you'll be good. Otherwise, that utility that Stanley pointed out looks like just what you need -- or use Nikon Transfer with your card reader.
cheers!

->> you can use a cf reader with the nikon software. I do that all the time and yes the auto-rotation feature does work flawlessly with it.
love that camera,

| ->> The latest version of photo mechanic recognizes the D2H vertical images and rotates them automatically in the "contact sheet."I think it was updated shortly after the camera was released. -Andy |

->> Thanks. I'll try the Nikon software. I still like copying files directly using the command-line (xcopy!), but if the Nikon software integrates well with CF readers then I'll be happy to use that.
It sounds like it's just a matter of time before every program is updated to handle the orientation field in the EXIF. Photoshop 7 and FotoStation 4.5 do not. |

| ->> I just downloaded my first card of images from my D2H and viewed them in Photoshop 7. In the file browser the vertical images showed up rotated properly, and when I click the thumbnail the full size image is also oriented properly. |
