A ? for Canon shooters/Photomechanic users/Photoshop CS

->> I attended Trent Nelson's digital workflow presentation at the 2003 Luau and like Photomechanic, however, there are a few questions that came to mind:

(1) how many of the functions of Photomechanic have been incorporated into the new Photoshop version.

(2) one feature of Photomechanic that I liked was the fact that when using Nikon generated images that one could rename them to whatever but you could retain the frame number. Canon's numbering system "camera embedded designated number" and frame number seem to be inseperable when using the batch rename feature in Photoshop 7.0. When using Photomechanic and Canon generated images can you retain the frame number? The advantage of this feature is that I can rename the images to whatever but still retain a reference number in the file to relocate the original frame.

Is there anyone with Canon generated images (preferably the 1D) that can test this to see if this is possible. For those with Photoshop CS have you tried this yet?

->> Dirk, I played with the Photomechanic for a while but confirmed that it is a memory pig, at least on the Mac. Several others had this same finding. I now use CS and the browser has been imporved a great deal. More like a lightbox.

Flag and unflag files for filtering, much larger thumbnails etc...
Buy you are right, Photomechanic was much friendler towards Nikon files as far as exif data.
Best,
Tom

->> I've just started using Photoshop CS this past week, but I am loving the new browser too. I still use Photo Mechanic for captioning, but I do that after I have edited and renamed all my photos in photoshop into a transmitting folder.

If Photoshop CS had an IPTC caoptioning system that was close to Photo Mechanics or FotoStations, I'd be a much happier camper.

Haven't really seen a way to retain the File Numbering Info.

In answer to your question regarding Canon 1D files and renaming in PhotoMechanic - yes, you can retain the frame number sequence while dropping the four digit camera code.

This is done by renaming the files using the rename feature. Type in the new file name you want then click on Variables in the dialog box and select frame number. Or, just type {frame} - (no spaces... in the message preview that I see here, it looks like it might display here with a space in front of "frame").

Just to make sure, I tested it, and it does work.
