->> Yep, I finally got a Mac. Nothin' special, a PowerMac G4 second hand. I've never been so happy. It was like bringing a puppy home for the first time .
I got thousands of dollars of PC software. You name it (XP Pro, Office XP Pro, Win 2000 Pro, Acobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver Studio, Visio...)
I got NOTHING for Mac.
OK, so what goodies do I need to get? What's free?
Later,
Carleton |

->> If you plan on moving to Mac forever you can transfer your PC license to Mac. Most companies allow this is you sign a promise to destroy your PC version.
The basics of Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, FTP or other communication software, Microtech card reader, and CD burner (if not already) will get you off the ground quickly. |

->> Hi Steven,
What is Photostation? Is it similar to Photo Mechanic? And where can you purchase a copy of Lexar Image Rescue?
Carlton,
Photo mechanic is a must. Best digital contact sheet editing program designed for photojournalists. |

->> Carleton,
Congrats. One you go Mac, you'll never go back!
As for the comment on external drives, I have 4 physical drives in my G4 case, and just replaced my 1x Superdrive with a 4x (Pioneer 106) for archiving to CD or DVD. As well as making DVDs of my short films to watch.
You'll definitely need Photoshop and PhotoMechanic. I miss Fotostation, there's still not an OS X version, so thankfully most (not all) of the features I like about Fotostation are in PhotoMechanic. I use "Fetch" for uploading, mainly because I have all my shortcuts set up for it and I'm too lazy to try any of the others, Fetch just works.
I'd also suggest "Toast", it's much more useful than Apple's "Diskbummer", I mean "Diskburner" ;-) |

->> Yuli:
D'oh!
I was typing in Photo Mechanic and FotoStation while trying to settle a dispute between my 3 year old and our dog. I seemed to make them into program (wouldn't that be great!).
Photo Mechanic is what I use primarily, I love the software. I have it for both my Mac and Win2k machines, it is an absolute must.
I use FotoStation for archive searching. Until another program (Camera Bits are you listening?) can search the caption info as well as FotoStation, I am stuck using both programs.
You can download Lexar Image Rescue from www.lexarmedia.com , but you need Lexar USB/JumpShot CF cards and a Lexra USB/JumpShot card reader to make it work. |

->> FotoStation Pro v5.0 should be out for Mac OS X by the end of the year. The Windows version is being released this week, and will be available for a 30 day demo at www.fotoware.com
The cool think with FotoStation is you can burn a FotoStation browser to a CD for your clients. It is nice for them to have the photos, and have them come in the form of a contact sheet., where they can click into full size images. FotoStation is also a great program for when you have someone else working quickly on your photos to transmit them. It is much easier to teach than Photoshop. |

->> Yuli:
You need the Lexar USB JumpShot card reader with Lexar Image Rescue, and obviously Lexar cards which are USB JumpShot enabled.
Most of my cards are Lexar JumpShot cards. The Lexar FireWire card reader will not allow you to use Image Rescue.
There are programs which will let you recover your images, such as Photo Rescue (http://www.photorescue.us). Photo Rescue s $29, and is awsome. I have used it a number of times, and is well worth the $29 (worth about $3,000 in recovered images from older Microdrives when I used them). |
