->> Probably not the best weekend to be asking this. Wish I was in LA with all the folks smart enough to go to the Luau but alas I'm not. Anyway anyone know of any good photo orgaganizing software? I know there have been posts before. I saw one program a while back but can't remember its name.

->> FotoStation is a good one.
There are a lot of them out there and all of them will do all or part of the job you are looking to do, the question is cost.
I personally use a filling system and Photo Mechanic to keep track of things.

->> Photo Mechanic works with Mac OS X, FotoStation (at least the version I have (4.5)) works in Mac OS 9. Photo Mechanic is $150.00, and you can download a 30 day trial version at http://www.camerabits.com. I believe you can download a trial Foto Station, also, but I don't know the address, or price, as it was provided to me by a client

->> Ok, I have Fotostation and Portfolio, and have tried iMatch.
Has anyone found a piece of cataloging software which will "automatically" segment/optimize your pictures so that you can easily burn off to DVD(or CD?)

I have not found an inteligent way to seperate my files so that I fill a CD/DVD with files. What do you all do? Leave alot of empty space on the discs and burn a the folder level?

->> For the Portfolio users...
Did you find that it took forever to load images?
I shoot an average of over a thousand images per weekend and am forced to create Portfolio catalogs for the mag I shoot for...Last week it was taking nearly ten seconds EACH to load in the images from my hard drive.
It has taken as long as 10-12 hours to do a complete weekend.
I hate Portfolio!
Is there a way to fix that???
I use Iview Media pro and have nothing but praises for it.

->> I use Fotostation to edit and imbed caption/keyword info, then use Extensis Portfolio as my database...

I've cataloged tens of thousand of images with Portfolio and can locate images with seconds... I maintain a server user version of this at the Chicago White Sox, and have it set up for various departments to access and download original files from our various "SNAP" servers... Can't work without it!

Worth- regarding your post regarding "time issues" using Portfolio..

Are you cataloging RAW TIFF files? Sometimes it takes awhile for the thumbnail to be generated... also... perhaps you've set your catalog preferences to save large, "high quality" thumbnails... this takes additional time and makes your catalog file much larger than they might need to be... I use small/low rez thumb settings and it works quite fast, especially on any file tweeked and saved as a JPG in Photoshop... the RAW files are a different story, but nothing as you describe. I can spin in a DVD with 800 RAW images in a matter of minutes... definitely not hours!

Are you running a Mac or PC? If Mac, OS 9 or X? If in 9, try alloting more memory to Portfolio... as much as you can give it. X takes care of that automatically.. PC? What's that ?? :)

If the database catalog file size becomes too large, I suggest creating smaller catalog files. I keep different ones for each year and that seems to work well.. You can search multiple databases easily, so any concern regarding which catalog to search should be disregarded.... no problem.

Check your preferences and try some alternate settings to speed things up... it should help.. :) RV

->> With Portfolio software- I burn a 700 meg CD with the data, (JPEG's, email...), then update the Portfolio database with the newly created CD. Takes about 15 minutes to catalog the entire CD. Ive never had a problem where it takes hours.

Their fotoslate program is awesome for doing layouts (make your own "three 4x6" templates, or "9 wallets" or whatever you want - then just drag/drop into the template you made. Better than photoshop's similar but not as customizable features.

->> Portfolio-
Make sure you have the newest update. I used to have a TON of trouble with it taking forever, and crashing on my WinXp and Win2k3 server, but the newest update sped it up a ton and made it much more stable...
I just have to figure out how to segment my Optical Media.
I often will shoot about 400-600 megs per event..I guess I am going to have to analyze it and maybe archive every other week, or something like that.
