Anyone have ideas? I don't have a print portfolio right now and don't have the $150. to replace the battery..
Thanks for any suggestions. |

->> Jean-
How old is your laptop? Is it a Powerbook? The same thing happened to my laptop battery and I called Apple (around5pm) and I had a new battery at my door step the next day by 3pm. So give it a try if you have had it for less than a year and its a Mac. It will be covered under warranty. And you still have time before the Luau.

->> Jean,
there will be a ton of us with notebooks, and I would be more than happy to let you use mine, if need be.......
There should be power outlets everywhere in the building, so I'd recommend bringing yours along, and wingin it.... If need be, one of us will let you use theirs....
There are soo many decent people among this group!!! I am glad to see the outpouring of support/help, in such a short amount of time.
And Jean, since Fry's is just around the corner, you may consider picking up a small battery back-up, or seeing about a new batt. at the gateway store that is less than a mile away, (the other direction). |

->> Thanks Zach. Getting a new battery would be my first choice and I have a Gateway store close by - but all my cash is marked for the trip. I'll guess I'll put the battery on my christmas list! I'll bring the laptop for use near outlets and in my room for downloading and checking my email and such.
I did just find out my department is doubling my work hours next semester - that means double the money!!!
Life is certainly pretty good lately, and I'm not sure why.
Thanks again.. |

->> Jean:
If I can find the spare battery to my Dell Latitude I can bring it for you. The Windows 2000 machine has both FotoStation and Photo Mechanic, which have slide show options.
Let me know if you want it,and I'll search for the spare battery (which works).
I'll get on Thursday around 5:30PM, but have to bail around 8:30PM on Saturday night to catch a flight home to be at work the next morning. |

If you have it on CD you can use my 12" G4 PowerBook, which also has FotoStation and Photo Mechanic, with the slide show options. |

->> Yep, photogs helping photogs...as I said I'm relatively new here but this is not an isolated situation. many times I've seen people selflessly offer help and even gear to photogs in need!
Very inspiring, folks...so cool to see. |

->> This place is truly amazing. You guys are all acting like friendly Canadians.... eh!!
I am one of the portfolio reviewers that has volunteered, I will have my own laptop, but without power to plug into it will die in two hours (dam PC!!) It is new with Windows XP and all the extras so all I need is jpegs on anything, even on a memory stick with USB and I can watch slideshow in XP instantly. But no power no laptop after two hours.
It might be a bit of a crap shoot as some reviewers will have laptops and some will not. If you have a special slide show built chances are it may not run in all machines, that being Mac and PC. Best to have Jpeg's then, check out this thread http://www.sportsshooter.com/message_display.html?tid=5170 as it has more info.
So much work has gone into setting this portfolio review up already by the volunteers working this part of the Luau.
I will ask if we can add "Yes I have a laptop" next to my name on the sign up sheet or I will just add it myself as that is very easy to do. It might help some others in the same boat. |

->> From the confirmation email that everyone received:
"PORTFOLIO REVIEWS.
This has become an important part of the Workshop & Luau for many participants ... a time where you can show your work to the faculty and staff, get an evaluation of your photographs, network and ask advice. We have expanded this portion of the Workshop & Luau to BOTH Friday and Saturday nights, running from 9 pm through midnight.
If you want to have a one-on-one portfolio review, you should try to limit your work to 20 images (we'll let you slide on picture stories and count that as one!) and can bring either transparencies or prints. Have your portfolio organized in an orderly fashion and be prepared to answer questions about your work!
If you plan on showing a digital portfolio, you will have to provide your own laptop and appropriate software to review your work. You can have as many different people look over your work in either or both portfolio review sessions. We anticipate having 30 - 35 members of our faculty and staff, along with several local photographers and picture editors, available to look at portfolios.
If you're looking for an internship or trying to just get your foot in the door in photography, this could be your chance." |

->> I seem to be in the same boat as Jean: The battery on my dell inspiron 8000 lasts about 22 minutes, not enough time even for 2 reviews. I will have my portfolio on a CD and USB flash drive for those reviewers w/laptops, but if I want to show my portfolio to someone w/o a laptop, I’m stuck.
If someone had a spare battery that I could borrow for the Luau, I would greatly appreciate it! |

| ->> looks like everyone needs to bring extention cords, and power strips. hopefully the review area has enough plugs. Too bad they don't have external chargers for laptop batteries. at least my dell doesn't. |
