Are newspaper photographers shooting with NEF?

->> considering that the pics are printed on 85ls (linescreen) and not 110ls of magazines, are you newspaper people bothering with the larger file sizes?
also, is the photographer responsible for digitally editing the pic with PS or Capture before sending it off to his/her editor? |

->> I always shoot jpg fine, I just don't see the point of using so much card space, when jpg's look just fine (pun intended) in print. Plus I only have 3 256MB cards and wouldn't have enough space.
For question 2, if I'm transmitting photos back I obviously edit myself, but if I'm back at the office I like to have a second opinion, if not an editor, then usually another photog (I consider myself a horrible editor, which is probably why I send 8-10 shots back)
PS. I use photomechanic to edit with, not Capture |

->> I shoot NEF depending on the situation. If the weather is terrible and I don't want to save constantly the pictures in my image tank, I use JPEG fine. JPEG is good enough for my paper. However, I like use either Bible and Capture for post-processing and sometimes it is easier to "fix" some problems in those programs when I use NEF.
In my case, I am resposible for editing. I convert my final NEF file to JPEG and edit it in Photoshop. |

| ->> When I shot Nikon, I shot in large JPEG b/c it is large enough to handle all most any size that a newspaper could run. Also, it saves a lot of time, especially when on the road or on deadline. Also, since when I shot Nikon I was working at a student paper (The Chronicle, Duke), I being the Photography Editor ended up editing most everybody's photos but by the end of the first semester, their was a handful of the more advanced photogs that were doing it themselves. As for my freelancing work, everyplace that I have worked for has wanted me to do the editing before I send it to them. |

->> I shoot JPEG fine pretty much all the time. As long as I watch the color balance, it works out pretty well. I got tired of waiting hours for the card to write NEFS, and the pix do take up a lot of space. With a 256mb card I can get 177 fine pix on there. I use Photo Mechanic to sift through the take (although the thumbnails are kinda small). I also use a Kodak 620x which writes raw files automatically. The kodak browser is pretty good at tweaking images before acquiring, too.
As far as editing goes, I just turn in what looks good with some variety for the page designers to pick. We number our pics in order of preference, and most times they choose the pix we like. We never touch the color when editing on laptops since those monitors are way off calibration. I work the pre-press desk so I usually correct my images on the calibrated monitor before I file them into Cumulus. |

| ->> FWIW, I shoot jpeg fine all the time, as the workflow with NEF is just too much, and if I shoot stuff like it's chrome (I religiously check histograms when I shoot), I'm fine. Stuff as a double-truck in a magazine looks fantastic from those jpegs. |

| ->> We use Nikon D1h bodies, shoot Jpeg fine and use Photomechanic to edit. On the road we always do tight edits. In the office, we look at things with our photo editor whenever possible. (He's very good!) Otherwise we do our own with input from fellow staffers when needed. Our presses are direct to plate and the results are great. Cheers...Dan. |

| ->> Hey Richard, if you're shooting jpg's in photo mechanic if you do a select all then do a preview you can look at the large images of all your shots (apple A then apple R) it takes a little longer but a lot eaier to see then those thumbnails. |
