SportsShooter.com: Member Message Board

Some things need to be kept private...

->> All this talk on the message boards lately about presentation software, and what's best for creating a portfolio, and what phase the moon is in has given us an idea.

We just created a new area for SportsShooter.com members that we are calling 'Hidden Galleries.'

The idea is simple. You have some images that you'd like to share - maybe with a friend, maybe with a current or potential client, maybe with a perspective employer. Yet you don't want to put these images up on your SportsShooter.com member page. And creating a web page of these images -- and dealing with HTML -- is a huge pain.

The 'Hidden Gallery' is a place where you can upload up to 20 images per gallery, in a private location on SportsShooter.com - a place within your member directory on the server.

Once you create a 'Hidden Gallery', it is available to you in two forms.

NUMBER ONE:
On the SportsShooter.com site -- here's a few examples:

http://www.sportsshooter.com/burfield/dylan/

http://www.sportsshooter.com/brad/series/

NUMBER TWO:
As a downloadable ".ZIP" file for you to use 'locally,' on your hard drive, via a web browser - no internet connection needed. After you've downloaded the .ZIP file, simply open the HTML files in a web browser, and PRESTO, instant presentation. We even remove all the SportsShooter.com navigation and branding, and allow you to set the background color, text color and link color in the downloadable version.

And remember, this area is considered 'private' because it isn't broadcast anywhere on the site. It doesn't count as an 'update', and it has nothing at all to do with your Member Gallery of 10 images that everyone in the world can see.

Here's how it works:

- Log in to your member page by clicking the "Members Area" link in the navigation rail.
- You will see the 'Create a hidden gallery' area in the lower left of the screen.
- Click the link that says 'Create a hidden gallery'.
- You will need between 1 and 20 JPEG files to create the gallery. That's it.

You can pick a background color, the text color, the link color, you can add a 'title' across the top as well as titles and caption for the images. And for added fun, you can even select the size of little thumbnail images - which are automatically created on-the-fly.

The technical requirements are basic: JPEG image files no larger than 256k in size.

Give it a try.

->> That's right sports fans...just when you thought us folks at the ol' website were just sitting back watching The Young & The Restless (well, I am anyway) we are back at it creating more cool stuff to help you all.

Actually, I did absolutely NOTHING. It's all Jason and Grover (probably mainly Jason) deciding to crank out this exciting new feature for our members in ONE DAY.

Crazy. It's fun to see what can happen when two really crazy people get together and get creative without having to get everything approved by committee vote.

Great job Jason and Grover...now all you members out there looking for a fun and easy way to do a cross-platform slide show FOR FREE look no further than this cool HTML tool right here at SportsShooter.com.

Use it. It's yours.

SportsShooter is easily the best $25 I've spent since... since... I can't think of anything that has given me so much for so little money.

Great work Jason and Grover... Brad, could you tell us what happened in today's episode? My girlfriend missed it...

You can have 5 total galleries, each one with up to 20 pictures....

...so that's a total of up to 100 pictures you can have in your hidden galleries.

I have one question (I probably overlooked it), but how do I "edit" a gallery...I see now that I need to change the color of the background...do I need to redo the entire gallery...

Thanks!!!

->> Delane,

When your gallery is on our site it must be grey- that is the default background color. The color you select will only show up when you download the file to your hard drive- that's when you see all the selections you made, including background color, type color, etc..

No- you cannot edit these galleries. They are not stored in our database, so if you make a mistake you must start over...

I'm thinking I could burn the downloadable "zip" too a CD, and give it to the SID at a local college so he could view the 20 images. I wanted to do it so it would be easy and convient for him to open and look at with out a lot on directions.

->> Jerome...

Most machines automatically associate .html files with a web browser, so when double-clicked the 'main.html' file should open a web browser automatically, whatever the default browser on the person's machine is. Have you tried that? See if it works for you, if not, let me know and I'll see what I can do to make that work.

->> I tried it. I down loaded and burned it to a cd. When I double clicked on the main.html nothing happend. I had to actually go to file, open, then when I selected main html it launched the portfolio. I had my browser open all ready, but I don't think that would have made a difference on why it didn't launch.

->> Jerome: This sounds like it should be very simple... but there are a few things to think about.

1) Which platform are you working with? If you're on a Windows machine, or even a MacOS X machine, HTML files should automatically launch the 'browser of choice' on that machine when double-clicked.

2) If you are using a MacOS 9.x machine, the main.html file will just look like a regular old text file, and double-clicking will do nothing other than prompt a dialog box asking you what kind of file it is. BUT, if you open the main.html file in a web browser, then select "File: Save As: HTML Source" and over-right the main.html file, it will attach some additional data to the file so that when you double click the file, it will know that it should be opened with a browser.

(I did this with MSIE on my Mac running OS 9, and it worked.)

So, its one extra step for you, but you can make it happen as you wish.

Also -- remember, if you're gonna burn a CD with these files on it, and you want it to be cross-platform, burn a ISO-9660 CD. But you probably already knew this.

But I have it now. Thanks for all the support. This is a great tool. Now I don't have to rush to build a website that will host my photos.
