Sad news, but unfortunately it isn't surprising at this point.
I joined the site on that first day, June 21, 2002, and got a member ID of 73.
SportsShooter.com was such an awesome resource for me when I was transitioning from student to professional all those years ago; it really did have a large impact on my career.
I found my second newspaper staff job, where I spent 15+ years, via a classified listing here!
I made the front page Special Feature and Currently Cool at least twice each over the years which was a big deal for me at the time.
I attended two Luaus (2003 and 2004) and made friends I never would have met otherwise.
So a huge thank you to Bert, Brad, Joe, Grover and Jason for creating this place and keeping it running for 20+ years, plus everyone who contributed over that time span.
I am sad to think about all this history disappearing from the internet though. Has there been any thought about a way to persevere all the newsletters, forums posts, FunPix and other content? If nothing else I'd love to be able to download an archive to have myself offline. |

| ->> Yeah, the years of posts on here really should be archived somehow. |

->> Having joined on Day 1, attended a few Luaus, and watched SportsShooter flourish, I often wishes The Management would allow others to take over, or create a permanent archive of the site.
But I guess the time has come ... |

->> It's been a minute since I contributed to a thread, but it can't be understated what an invaluable resource this site became. Just look at that photo, I've got brown hair!
Photojournalism needs Community to survive, SportsShooter provided that. I thank all who were involved with its birth, management and enduring legacy for putting in those hours which may have seemed thankless at times, but never from me.
I do hope you consider a searchable archive for this content, there's a lot of lessons here that newbies will need to learn, and us geezers on occasion need to be reminded of.
Again, thank you.

| ->> It has been a great ride. As an early subscriber to Bert's newsletter, Sportsshooter opened up a wealth of information from multiple sources. Bert's vision became a reality to share experiences through for all intent and purposes the first "social medium." Throughout the years, I learned from the best and sometimes the most specialized photographers. The Luau's, workshops, academies and informal local gatherings of sports photographers allowed me to learn and grow. I am forever grateful for the experience and to this date formed friendships with people who I otherwise never would have met. Thank you Bert, Jason, Grover, Joe and Brad for realizing Bert's vision. |

| ->> Sad to see the end of the site that impacted and inspired so many photographers over the years. When I joined in 2005 it was a badge of honor to be accepted as a member of Sportsshooter. The wealth of knowledge shared was not available anywhere else. The founders worked diligently to assemble sponsors offering discounts on equipment. Sportsshooter Academy. Members shared venue information and contacts. Young photographers were mentored by the most talented, seasoned photographers in the industry. The birth of Photoshelter and Think Tank Photo by members of Sportsshooter. So much time and passion went into this site over the years. Access to an archival site would garner interest still. I visited to renew my anual membership for yet another year. Sadly it is goodbye. Looks like 168 of us made it to the end. |
