Is Anyone Here???

->> My membership renewed recently and I realized that I have been away from SS for quite some time because the site became stale. I was shocked at what I saw when I took a recent look at the SS site.
Looking at the Member Index, it appears that there are only 220 of us active members left. The "Current Issue" of the Newsletter is from 2015. Of the 100 messages on page 1 of the Message Board, only 20 are from 2021. Some go back to 2018.
Is SS still relevant?
Seems like the different sports photography sites on social media have taken over.
Yes, the compensation decline for sports photography forced a lot of great shooters to go elsewhere. Some of us still have team gigs that is just supplemental income (beer money).
To my point, let's see how many responses this thread gets... |

->> Yes and no. I'd say we are here, but just not as active. Still fun to submit stuff for the clips contest and that alone is worth the $25.
But yeah, kinda wish somebody would pass the baton on running the site. |

->> I was fairly active up to 2012 and drifted away for a variety of reasons. I am now retired and have done some work for GateHouse Media / Gannett and for an area college athletics department. So I came back a few months ago and was surprised at the level of inactivity.
I was also active on Photo.net for a long time too. I don't visit there much. If I have a question on something, I Google it rather than post here or Photo.net because in could be weeks before anyone responds.
I'm with Vincent on management of the site. It was designed probably 20 years ago and not much has changed. Personally, I would like to be able to post larger images and have improved navigation in that area. There are a lot of areas that could use some updating.
For $25 a year, I'll hang around a while and will try to do more updates and posting on the message board. |

->> I tried my best to stir up some interest, but nothing much happened. Over so many decades, I learned so much here, and it's a shame that the place is now so quiet.
The $25/year is nothing, but I so enjoyed reading active discussions here, along with all the rest.
Maybe all members could get an email once a week or once a month, saying what has been happening since their last visit?
To answer your question, for several weeks I was "here", but then I guess with so little activity, I sort of dozed off.... |

| ->> Still here, wish it was still as active as it was. This place was such a great source of knowledge back in the day. Nothing has really replaced it either. Yeah, there are some Facebook groups, but most seem to be full of very vocal people who have tons of opinions but little actual experience. |

->> Crazy idea, but if if a few of us could talk the original creator into at least letting us have the keys to drive (not looking for ownership), maybe we could breathe a little life back into it.
I mean that email once a month reminder alone should get a few folks back on the regular. Plus I know tons of people are looking for alternatives to Facebook groups for the very reason Andrew mentioned.
I'm in. |

->> There are ten of us participating in this message - if we continue to post, others may join in as well. If enough "new" information starts to be posted on a routine basis, the place could recover.
As for me, I'm not doing much "sports photography" any more, but I'm doing a lot of photography - using my new and old cameras, scanning my old 35mm film negatives, and so on. Maybe I should try to post my own questions here, instead of the forums I mostly use nowadays. |

->> I think the site needs a bigger social media presence.
There is a clip contest, 13 photos place a month, be good to sprinkle those through the month to build a little presence on instagram and twitter.
Maybe offer some TikTok content with it as well?
Any other ideas? |

| ->> There is still plenty of good information on here. A lot has changed since this site started, heck I was a subscriber to Bert's original email periodical called "sportsshooter" and it was the foundation for this site. I made some great friends on it and learned some great stuff from them. I venture on it once in a while. Nice to see some good people still care about it |

->> Love the support that many of you still show for the site. It is very much appreciated.
Unfortunately, times have changed and with that, I'll be shuttering the site in a few weeks.
You can read my quick write up here: https://www.sportsshooter.com/news/2789
It's crazy to think we launched this thing over 20 years ago and it is still here. But....all good things must come to an end I suppose.
Thanks everyone! |
