->> I have an R5 and shoot NFL weekly. It's taken quite a bit of trial and error. I had a few meltdowns out of frustration with getting the AF settings right. The mirrorless is definitely a different animal. I finally sat down with a Getty shooter who has been shooting with it for awhile and copied his settings. These are what we use for football.
AF settings: AF operation MF
AF method: expand AF area around
Subject to detect: people
Continuous AF: disable
AF-assist: on
Case 4
Tracking sensitivity -1
Accel/decel tracking +1
Lens electronic MF OFF
One-shot AF release prior: release
switching tracked subjects 1
The other settings are personal preferences, and honestly, I don't know what some of them mean. I just wanted my R5 to focus like my 1DX Mark III, and these settings are pretty close.
Other people may jump in and disagree, but I'm an old school shooter, and I don't like the camera being too intuitive. When I first started shooting with it, it was searching around for faces, and eyes, etc. It doesn't work for me with football. I actually prefer my 1DX Mark III and still use it as my main body, but clearly mirrorless is the future. |

->> I realize this is a pretty old thread, but I got an R5 over the spring ... and, as Margaret said, I've also been through some "trial and error" in getting focusing/tracking settings that work consistently ... and this is what I've come up with that seems to mimic the actions of my former 1DX Mark II's:
Case 4
Tracking sensitivity -2
Accel/decel tracking +2
Lens electronic MF OFF
One-shot AF release prior: focus
switching tracked subjects 0
And these are the same settings I use for my R3 as well. |
