Nikon 400mm f/2.8D II IF-ED tele error

->> My Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 400mm f/2.8D II IF-ED is not communicating with either of my teleconverters properly – both the 1.4 II and the 2. When attached to the 400 and any body in my collection, the f number flickers between it's selected value, and one stop up. Also, AF will not respond. This error does NOT occur in manual mode. The 400 functions properly on any body without a teleconverter.
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance!

| ->> Perhaps try cleaning the contacts? |

| ->> Yes, I cleaned the contacts. Also checked the both tele's in conjunction with other bodies AND other telephoto lenses to rule out one malfunctioning body, and/or malfunctioning converters alone. The issue only occurs in conjunction with the 400. |

| ->> To be clear(er) both teleconverters were functioning as expected a few days ago, and now they are not. No idea what happened. |

->> ALL contacts? including the teleconverters and camera? Also look for any bits of wire or other metal that could be shorting.
You might want to take off the teleconverter front/back mounts and the lens' to see if there is some foreign debris behind them. |

->> Time to eliminate. Take your lens and body to a pro camera store in your city that carries bodies and teleconverters. Open a brand new tele and try it with your body. If the lens works it may be your convertors. Then connect your lens to a new body and tele. If it doesn't work then it is the lens; if it does work then it may be your body or body/tele combo. You can also use their rental gear to test.
Once you eliminate all possibilities and it is definitely the lens, then send it to one of the independent repair places around the country that still services your model lens. Do a SS thread search for company names. Others have recommended some to those in need. |

->> I've always noticed on the older AF Nikon lenses with the aperture ring, they can, over time, separate causing errors. If you jiggle that you might pinpoint the problem.
Good luck.
Call these guys before sending...

->> Samuel,
D4 – multiple bodies.
There's some sort of a communications error. One body won't focus the lens every once in a while without a teleconverter. And now, the teleconverters work just fine.

->> It sounds like your silent wave motor is croaking. Having had it happen before with a Nikon 300 2.8 AFS II, it will cost you $700-$1,000 if memory serves me right. Do the teles work with a different lens?
Nikon won't service that lens? Are you positive? They fixed my 300 a couple years ago, but I waited a month for the motor... |

->> Chris,
It's not the SWM. I've had the motors physically fail, and the sensor go bad independently on other lenses. None of the symptoms of any of those systems' failures are present.
Yes, I'm positive about servicing. Confirmed with multiple sources at Nikon.
For now I'm just going to keep shooting. FWIW, all my gear is fully insured, so if it comes down to it mid season, I'll file a claim and pick up a new lens.
Thanks,
- Andrew |
