->> I'm considering going to NAB this year. Knowing it's all about video and broadcasting, is it still worthwhile to attend for networking or anything else?
Thanks |

->> I attended the Expo a couple years ago. I did so to network with companies and get leads for sponsorships for my ASMP chapter. There are no potential editorial clients like magazines, image buyers, etc. there.
Yes, it is geared to video -- high end gear -- on the network TV level, film studios, etc. But there are other aspects to it that are of interest to still photographers. Biggies like Nikon, Canon, Zeiss, B&H, Epson and others are there, plus support vendors too like memory card and hard drive companies.
What are you interested in? If you want to outfit a commercial video studio or broadcast center then there will be plenty of people happy to network with you who will be delighted to sell you tens of thousands of $$$ worth of equipment. If you're looking for a printer, Epson will have their high-end machines like wide-format roll printers and people to answer your questions; but not for entry-level printers that you find at Staples.
Are you planning on attending speaker events or just the manufacturers Expo? Attendance is not cheap. However, you can find free passes around for just the Expo. I've gotten a few emails in the past couple weeks from them trying to entice me to return.
Also come prepared with very comfortable shoes as you'll do miles of walking through multiple convention center buildings. I suggest you download the list of vendors there from the show's website along with a floor map showing where everyone is, and then highlight the map with your target companies so you have a game plan. And don't become surprised when you find yourself lost and asking for directions. It's a monster show.
Just remember that the exhibiters there are there to sell, sell, sell -- not talk shop or give you money. It can be a fantastic experience for those who did their homework and know what they're seeking, or a disappointing one for those looking for something that the show doesn't offer. |

->> it's a little late...but i vote yes. eventually, if you haven't already, you will be asked to shoot video. so it is best to be prepared and know what is going on in the video world. if you didn't make it to the Vegas NAB, there is a smaller version of NAB in NYC in mid October.
all the lighting and video gear people are there. Nikon and Canon included. Sony has an insanely huge booth every year. Black Magic (video cam and software manufacturer) was pretty huge too.
just be prepared for information overload!!! |
