| ->> Anyone on here a member of a local press photographers association? There has been some talk about starting up a group here in Pittsburgh and was just looking for any pro's or con's to those who might be involved with this type of group in other cities. Any info would be greatly appreciated |

->> Not press photo, but I belong to the Connecticut Fire Photographers Association. Aside from the differences between that and a press photo organization, it is worthwhile.
There are obvious discounts for an organization on certain things, like software or insurance, but as a group we have monthly meetings which allow us to learn from each other. As a group collectively we have a voice when working on navigating issues, which is far easier than doing so one on one. Collectively we have managed to push back heavily on the TV stations in Connecticut stealing photos and broadcasting or publishing them without consent.
The key is an organization is only as strong as its members and how active its members are. The organization has been around since 1975 and since I joined a few years ago there has been a core of about 25 very active members, which really allow the organization to function effectively and for us to all use each other as resources when needed. |
