| ->> I search for hands-on reviews every couple of days but haven't seen any yet. I'm somewhat intrigued, but I'm going to wait until someone I trust actually has some experience with one before considering it. |

->> Well, I have been a bit skeptical about this lens, but as it turns out, some back problems actually forced me to try out this lens last weekend instead of using my 600/4 and 300/2.8 as I normally might. The experience of shooting this in somewhat overcast conditions was okay on my D3s. I consider these photos to be adequate if not great.

->> I've been using this lens a lot the past couple of weeks for spring nature stuff. It's really impressive optically, very sharp. Great for shooting small things up close from about 7 feet at 500mm. But the lens hood is kind of a joke. Mine broke the first week after falling off several times. I've had to put it on so often I guess it loosened the threads on the front rim in front of the big element and it just fell off a while ago. Fortunately, it screwed right back on. Probably got a bunch of dust inside, though.
The tripod mount is kind of crappy, too, like the old 300mm f4. It doesn't move easily from horizontal to vertical without falling off the track.
Build isn't the best, so i can now see why it's surprisingly inexpensive for a lens that packs so much inside. I'm pleased with the purchase so far, but I'm going to have to remember to be gentle with it. |

->> Guys...remember this lens is 1300 bucks. It's very sharp, reasonably quick to acquire, and even better at holding AF. The VR is perhaps the best I've seen on any lens from Nikon. I have handheld shots (wedding) at 1/20th at 500mm that are very sharp indeed. Not that big a deal in the sports world I know...but good to have anyway.
Cant wait to get it on a D500 which was supposedly kinda built for it, and it for the D5/500 |

->> Debra...
The 80-400mm is a variable f/4.5-5.6 lens that costs a grand more than the 200-500mm f/5.6 glass. Since you and most everyone else probably already have a 70-200mm f/2.8 why duplicate the range and lose two stops to boot?
I have a 300mm f/4 that is sharper than the zooms in the tests I did using a D810; and add a TC-14 and you have 420mm f/5.6 long telephoto. |

->> Hi Everybody...
Just got the 200-500mm to shoot the Swiftsure International Yacht Races in Victoria BC next weekend... Shooting RAW on the XQD card format... from a whale watching vessel.
Cant bring the 300 2.8 and 3 bodies so hopefully the f 5.6 will work on my Nikon D4. and a few other lenses... May be working in wet locations.

Preliminary tests with the 200-500 mm on the D4, D3 and D300 where impressive... The VR works as advertised down to 1/60 sec...The lens is well worth the cost...expect some compromises for the low price... paid $1400 at Tall's Camera in Bellevue Washington.
Will chime in when its over...
