->> Hats off to Brian Powers. Brian did a real nice job on the portraits of his former co-workers… For the last couple of weeks I have been reading about the Chicago Sun-Times laying off it's entire photo staff... Yes, it's a shock when 30 people, 30 lives, 30 photographers, 30 very dedicated, award winning photojournalist lose their jobs. Lets not to forget there is some collateral damage because I'm sure many of those photographers have families to support... You have to truly wonder if upper management is thinking clearly when they decide to outfit the remaining writing staff with iPhones to take and supply pictures for the newspaper...
But please remember, an estimated 42,000 journalist have lost their jobs since 2007 according to the website Paper Cuts. A number of newspapers have laid off their whole staff after shutdown ending a 100 plus years of being the voice of the communities it served…

That 42,000 number is just an estimate... I'm willing to bet that number is larger because the website relies mostly on word of mouth to collect it's information... I'm sure the 30 photographers will bounce back. It may not be in their chosen profession but they will bounce back... I hope all of you other photojournalist out there that still have jobs are taking notes and planning... Your Plan "A" is to be a photojournalist but some bean counter out there might call your number and kick you out the door... You better have a Plan "B" ready and that Plan "B" needs to ready NOW!!! I'm speaking from experience... I have been laid off twice while working for newspapers... |
