->> So Gordon Haywood's thread kind of changed directions..., but I always love the idea of seeing what fellow photogs produced in 2012.
It's nearing the end of the year and while I haven't produced my galleries for the newspaper yet, here is my persona/freelance Best of 2012:

->> This is my first official year as a photographer. I freelance for a local media site in my hometown and these are pictures of some of the assignments they sent me to photograph. I am grateful they gave me a chance as it has led to many paying gigs outside of working for them. I gained valuable experience by shooting a variety of different events other than sports. Hopefully I can take my photography to another level this upcoming year.

->> Nice work guys.
I'm fortunate enough to work in a city that keeps our paper busy and makes my job pretty easy. The way I see it is, people take pictures on their vacation. So everyday is a vacation for me.
Here are my best of 2012 and yes I opened with a sunset, silhouette. How double cliché of me.
Thanks for looking.

->> 2012 has been a pretty bad year for me in terms of photography. I have had problems with inspiration and problems with my equipment. I have also been hit by some personal problems that has not made things better. Now I have gone through all the pictures I have taken in 2012 to try to pick out some favorites, and it's been really difficult.

Pictures no.13 and no.14 are from a series that has affected me most this year. They are from the 2 September when the 29-year-old Victor collapsed on a football field, although he received treatment on the spot they could not save his life and he was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. Image #13 is taken 2 minutes before Victor collapsed when he had just given his team the lead with 1-0 with a well-aimed shot into the topcorner. |

->> I can't recall if I've ever participated in one of these in previous years, but here is a link to my member page for my top 10 of 2012. I only shot one month in January 2012 before I picked it up again full time in September after doing page design. Then an opening became available and I'm back shooting again.
Ironically, I was telling a couple of people recently what I did and one said, "I thought those jobs were extinct." The other one said, "I didn't think there were any of those jobs left." Yeah.

Its daunting, moving in 6 days to a new city with some of the best photographers in the world, pursuing a pie-in-the-sky dream with (comparatively) little experience and a decent amount of Arabic language skills. Graduating college and being without a full-time job is scary, but at least I can look back on the year and be proud of some of my work.
Lots of football, Rose Bowl, lots of basketball, elections, getting THE photo of the arrest of a Heisman Trophy Finalist, and a lot of fun.
If any of you live in the DC metro area and would like to get lunch, dinner, coffee, or drinks, let me know. I'll be flying in on Saturday the 5th for good, and am currently homeless, so drinks sound good right about now! haha. |
