Petaluma Police Department
NEWS RELEASE
For Immediate Release/Broadcast
DATE: September 15, 2011
Report Number: 11-4405
Occurred Date and Time: Friday, September 2, 2011at approx. 4:05 PM
Incident: Camera lens falls from sky putting hole in roof of a house
Location: 300 block of Walnut Street
Summary: Officers reviewing a mailed in police report yesterday were alerted to this incident. Petaluma resident Debbie Payne reported on September 2, at approx. 4:05 PM she heard a loud bang inside her house. She went outside to investigate. Her next door neighbor also heard the noise and was outside. She found an approx. 9” hole in her roof and a damaged Canon camera lens lying below it. The lens had traveled through her roof and skipped down the side of her house damaging two screens, then struck the ground. Payne did not see any aircraft in the immediate vicinity. Payne said an estimated repair bill from a local contractor was $4600.00. The officer assigned to the case is following up on the serial number on the lens, contacting the FAA, and the Petaluma Airport. Payne was concerned because she lives near an elementary school and that no one was injured from this falling object.

->> Louis; I think they might be referring this website that chronicles Steven Frischling's stories he's posted over the years. One of which was when he tells of dropping a 300/2.8 from the rafters of a hockey venue.

->> That homeowner has NO IDEA how valuable that camera may be!
It likely contains a CF card containing the images of several never before seen images from such, much talked about, assignments like:
** The pool images from inside the morgue following the disaster of the flight of TWA 800 which, heretofore have never appeared on any wire ever.
** Combat images from the photographer's months in Iraq to which there have been no images published.
** Images from the collapse of Tower 2 of the World Trade Center on 9/11.
** Photos from inside the traveling White House press pool.
** Any image from Hurricane Katrina coverage.
** The arrest of John Gotti.
** A photo from the day the photographer was shot 9 times.
** Images of the photographer being attacked by Hugh Grant.
** Lost Super Bowl images.
** Weddings that may have been shot but never delivered.
** etc..., etc..., etc...
That camera is simply priceless and belongs in a museum.
I'll likely get at least one "Inappropriate" for this post, and that's ok. Journalism is a profession of honesty and integrity; people who have neither do not belong and will never have my respect. |
