This image by Dave Price which appears in the San Francisco Peninsula Press Club blog shows what's left of the San Mateo County Times, a MediaNews Group paper. In 2007 the paper moved to a new location. Last month the San Mateo County Times was incorporated under the banner of the (San Jose) Mercury News, and its name dropped from the front page.

You might wonder why the sign is still standing. It's probably not for sentimental reasons. Most of the time the reason they leave streetside signs intact during a demolition is to make the property more valuable for commercial sale.

A lot of times old buildings have signs out front which would not be allowed to be built under current-day sign ordinances. When ordinances are enacted, existing signs are grandfathered in and can remain as long as they are never removed and the owner keeps paying the fees. The sign can be reskinned, repainted, etc. as long as it stays within it's footprint.

Grandfathered signs are valuable to banks and other commercial properties because all they have to do is repaint/relogo the sign and they can have streetside presence that no one else in the area can have. Realtors know this and therefore charge more for the property.

No idea if this is the case here...but given the care they took to work around the sign, it's a good guess.
