| ->> Apparently, when you install the Mac verison of DropBox, it installs a little app called "Growl" without asking. I am now getting update promps for it, and I went to the Growl website, and they say of you download a removal program, you can remove it. I'm a little hesitant to download a separate "removal" program... never heard of doing that before, so I'm wanting to know if any of you have encountered this before and is this little removal applet legit. |

->> i like growl. it's a nifty little notification program. they're adding it to the mac app store i believe.
but if you want to remove it, i believe using the uninstaller is the only way...
or you could just disable it. |

| ->> I really like growl but it's definitely a matter of preference. You can set it up to give you what notifications you want and not give you others. But yeah, the removal link above works if that's the route you want to go. |

->> Several programs use Growl for notifications. I know if you run TweetDeck for Twitter feeds it uses Growl for the pop-up notifications.
I'm not a big fan either, but seems mostly harmless. |

->> Growl can be useful as a notification tool.
Has anyone set-up their Growl so it will push out an audible alert when Compressor is done squashing a video?
It takes so long to compress video it would be nice to not pay attention to the computer, do something else then hear a Growl alert telling me that it's done. I downloaded an AppleScript that was supposed to do this but it seemed difficult to configure, as in I tried but it didn't work.
I know in ye olde days when we had dial-up modems almost all programs rang a bell when a download was completed so you could fall asleep downloading that Marathon game or something and wake-up from a bell ringing.
Would be nice if apps would do this again. |

->> Growl can also push notifications to your iPhone which can be useful for long FTP uploads or rendering in Compressor like Baron mentioned. Super useful at times.
