"Hidden Gems" for PJ Grad School
Kevin Cook, Photographer
Philadelphia | PA | USA | Posted: 1:54 PM on 08.31.11
->> I am applying for grad school for Fall 2012 and after heavy research, talking to other photogs, professors and searching the interwebs I definitely know where I am looking to apply.

We all know Ohio, Missouri, Syracuse, Univ of Texas all have top of the line grad schools for photojournalism...but what are some schools that have great programs as well, but aren't nearly as talked about? Maybe like the Univ. of North Texas, etc.

Thanks!

Kevin

->> Instead of spending $25K or so for a couple years of grad school why not take the money and travel around the world taking pictures and finding stories?

An MA would be great if you want to eventually teach but if photojournalism is your goal you couldn't beat some real world experience.

Learning a second language (if you don't already know one) would be a big help too.

->> I agree with jim. why waste your money on a degree that most probably isn't worth the paper it's printed on when you can take that same money and get REAL WORLD experience. in my humble opinion with all the great shooters (who btw have degrees) out of work I have to wonder who will hire someone just because they have an advanced degree. but you're getting advice from a guy with a high school diploma.....so take it with a grain of salt...8)

->> If your dream is to really become a working photojournalist,I have to agree with Chuck. Go out and get some real world experience. Having looked at your sportsshooter portfolio, you already have the skill necessary to shoot meaningful journalistic photos, so why waste your time at college.

On the other hand, Craig has certainly given some excellent advice also. Get your MBA. It will serve you much better in the future. As far as learning more about photography I would suggest checking out the numerous workshops given by professionals. They are a lot less expensive.

Zach Arias "One Light Workshops" is an example of a great lighting workshop for a guy who failed miserably at photography the first time around and then went back into it and created a nice career.

I wish you well.

Rich
