->> Has anyone used an ftp app on a smartphone to transmit images? If so, which one worked well and is this an easy process? Any other issues that might arise with this setup?

->> I tried to use ANDftp for android last winter. I didn't have enough time to tinker with it but it should work if set up right for your server. I can't remember where I read it but someone said if you use the servers IP address instead of ftp.etc.com, you will have better results. My server kept dropping the connection wich lead to a bunch of corrupt files being transmitted. Apparently if I used the IP address, that wouldn't have happened. Haven't played with it since because I just use a wireless tether and FTP out of photo mechanic or other FTP software.

->> I use MoPhotos for Android. It loads files from an EyeFi card, applies my batch caption (exported from Photo Mechanic), then allows me to finish the caption, resize the file, and FTP it in (The last two steps are in a beta version that will launch soon). In the mean time, AndFTP does the trick.
