->> My brother is going to basic in Feb. and he is graduating sometime next June.
My family is making plans for graduation weekend now. And I was wondering if any one had shot a graduation at Pairs Island and could help me out with things. Something like this I dont want to be using a point and shoot.
I have no idea what the restrictions would be for being on the base.
So please any helpful advice would be great!
Thanks! |

| ->> I've shot a number of graduations at MCRD in San Diego. It's the West Coast version of Paris Island(without the mosquitos and hot weather) They have always welcomed picture taking as hundreds of family and friends are snapping away. To give you piece of mind, just call the PAO there and just see if there are any restrictions. The might give you better access as well. I always use my 300mm a lot as it looks nice shooting long down the line as the pups are marching in formation. Maybe go wide once they are released and go hug the parents. |

->> David,
Been there, done that, got the T-Shirt, all recently. Used 300, 70-200, flashes on the inside stuff, etc. The only real restriction I saw was to be careful about shooting whatever they call the MP's on duty, actually saw some cameras and cards get confiscated. Seems like if you asked them they were OK with it, otherwise it was a big no no.
The things that took me by surprise included the firing of Cannons during the graduation ceremony, the need for a wide angle lens during the motivational run, and how often I wished for a 50mm 1.4 while in the museum. |
