Disappointed in Canon...

| ->> Man! I lost the multi-controller button on my Mark III, and thought I might be able to get one from Canon. I can, but I have to buy the entire back assembly at $157! For a plastic button!? Guess I will have to be more careful about moisture with that body... |

| ->> If you can get a hold of a Bic pen and take off the little plastic thingy on top you might be able to use that in place of your button. I haven't done it on a Mk3 but did something similar years ago when Canon wanted $200 to replace the button (and sub-assembly) on an earlier Canon digital SLR. |

->> Mr. Colburn,
Good plan! What was explained to me by a Canon rep is that there is some weather-resistance to that part...I can't believe, though, the wouldn't sell the button. I somehow knocked mine off last weekend... |

->> Michael, you might want to try eBay with this seller, procamerarepair. I have purchased several Canon camera parts from him and he is honest.
Earlier I posted the eBay link but apparently it didn't make it to this message board.

->> My college darkroom has a humorous poster with a ton of phrases, maxims, and tidbits on it.
My favorite was something along the lines of "A camera shop will charge you $20 to fix something you could fix with a butter knife. They'll charge you $90 to repair a camera you tried to fix with a butter knife." |

->> They want to charge me $150 to get the spec off the sensor of my G10. When I asked why it cost so much just to clean the sensor, the guy told me they don't clean the sensor, rather they just replace the whole sensor.
I mean, imagine if the entire world operated that way. You've got a little scratch in the door of your car, and the guy at the body shop says he won't touch up the scratch, however he'd be happy to replace the entire door.
Pretty ridiculous. |

->> Bradley,
As a sidebar, have you had bodywork done lately? My wife had a paint chip in the rear hatch of her minivan. We asked for a repair quote, and the dealer told us that for $600 they would dismount the panel, strip the clear coat, refinish the single square inch of damage, reapply the clear and reassemble the whole thing... We passed. |

->> If you don't get the part replaced, be careful with getting it wet. It will cause a leak into the body. I know of at least 2 bodies destroyed over that stupid little part.
@ Bradly ... I would imagine the labor costs and time to open a P&S body far exceeds the cost of just replacing major assemblies. It's actually quite common to do this in many electronics. |

| ->> Had a similar issue with Canon when I needed some replacement screws and bearings in my tripod collar. They said the parts didn't exist and I needed to buy a new $720 complete tripod collar. |
