| ->> Hurricane Irene is currently projected to hit the eastern seaboard and media outlets across the area are gearing up for coverage. Does anyone have advice or a good story for covering storms like this? I may be headed out with camera in hand as the projections have the eye of the storm making landfall on Long Island. |

->> Thanks for the plug Andrew and Alex.
Some people have emailed me over the last couple of days inquiring about BGAN rentals so I thought I'd just put this link here too:
http://www.satellitephonestore.com/
These guys are FAR from the only place on the net to rent BGAN units, and I've only used these particular guys once, but they were very knowledgeable and are well-stocked. They also have several locations including in the NE.
Remember, that if you're going to rent a BGAN that you'll have to buy some data "time" too. These guys can take care of that for you and give you an idea of how much pre-paid air time you'll need. Heck, you may not need any of it... sometimes cell signals work, but if the client or your employer are paying for it...
Make sure you get a handset too so you can make voice calls and be on the net at the same time. And remember, whether you're sending via BGAN or a cell signal... smaller files are your friend. |

->> Technically, Irene could make landfall in a couple of places, not just N.C. or NYC. Happens all the time with hurricanes.
Excellent article from Brian.

| ->> Sean: You should at least ensure that you have a full tank of gas as you may be making 100-150 mile RTS. If th epower is knocked out how will they pump gas. I was on LI for Belle in 1976 and that storm did some damage but not what it could have done. Dune Road in Hampton Bays was under water, the water was high in Moriches and a new inlet was opened up to the Bay. Many power lines were downed and driving around was like navigating a maze. The Nassau and Suffolk PDs will keep you out of certain areas unless you live there so maybe you should stay close to Hempstead and perhaps run SE and cover the damage that may occur on Sunrise Highway. Its doubtful unless you have press creds that you will be able to take any of the parkways out to Jones and Lido Beach. Watch out for power lines. |

| ->> Chuck....I've been saying the same thing for several days now. You'd think NC was BFE, and that making landfall there was not big deal as a CAT 3 hurricane, but NYC with a CAT 1 is a major story. After Katrina, every major city is being overly cautious. Not that I blame them. But I agree everyone in New York thinks they are the center of the universe....;>) |

| ->> Willis and Chuck: I think the big deal is that NYC hasn't been hit by a hurricane in a really long time (100+ years I believe). 1938 hurricane hit Long Island and crushed CT, RI and MA. |

| ->> NYC has 7 million people and NJ and Boston have a lot of people, too. NC has experienced hurricanes in the recent past. New yorkers have a history of being hard headed ad the govt. needed to move all those people. It was appropriate coverage. I'm glad there were only 19 deaths (so far). For the most part, it seems that people took it seriously, and we're lucky the storm wasn't as bad as it could have been. |

| ->> IMHO it was blown out of proportion by the media, like anything these days. But what can you do. There is a reason I no longer what the news, this was a prime example of it and continues to be. |

->> Amen, Mathew, well said.
Fox News, any day, any time: Suddenly........ a NEWS ALERT!!! "Live, from the Sky News chopper in mid-town LA, we are witnessing a white Lexus...I can see it now, yes, a White Lexus is......let's see..... yes... is GETTING A PARKING TICKET! Wait till you hear WHO this person is flaunting the law...and what we should do about it...when we come back"...
Yawn.
Oh, and when the 15th miner had been hauled out of the collapsed mine in Chile, Fox news was saying "NEWS ALERT!!...any minute now...the first miner should appear out of the elevator..."
snorrrre... |

->> by the way, another prime example of trying to blame storms for deaths when half of them are questionable at best.
Man peeing into a toilet being struck by lighting in his house would be counted as a death if it was a storm. I mean come on now, give me a break
