Live wireless tethered slideshow using Nik plugins and Photo Mechanic

->> I posted this in the Aperture discussion boards, but since you guys probably have a lot more experience with Photo mechanic and transmitting in general, I wanted to get some input from you. I am a wedding photographer and one of the options couples can order is a photo booth. I am looking to take it to the next level. Here is my gear and possible software

Hardware:
Canon 5D Mark II on a tripod with an Elinchrom Quadra kit
Pocket Wizards
Canon WFT-E4 Wireless File Transmitter
Airport Express
Macbook Air 11" i7
HD projector

Software:
Aperture
Photoshop
Nik Silver Efex
Photo Mechanic
Lion
Aperture Hot Folder

I want to use the Nik Silver Efex because I just really like the look I can get out of it.

I would like to set up the projector and laptop in the reception room, and the photo booth in a separate room, which is why I am trying to do it wirelessly.

I was thinking I could set up Photo Mechanic to do a live ingest of the images (maybe only small JPG's and keep the RAW on a card to keep it running quickly) to a folder where photoshop would run an action (this part I'm not sure about) which includes the Nik filter and border, then photoshop exports to a final folder where I can do a live slideshow in Photo mechanic.

Anyone think this is viable? Can you think of a better way to accomplish it?

Thanks,
Joshua

->> Sounds like a case for an Automator workflow. I've only played with Automator but is should be possible. Maybe a visit to your local apple store genius bar is in order. Keep me posted!

Like so many of these things, it is PC based but you could run it through Windows on your i7 laptop.

The whole setup might work better if you set it up to FTP your images to your laptop (I'm sure there are some instructions for that somewhere in the blagosphere), and you only have to use one instance of PM or whatever else - which just displays the files when they're dropped into the finished folder by the PS action. You can probably use just about anything that'll display fullscreen to show the slideshow, and just have it restart through that automator action as more photos get added to the folder.

Using automator is actually incredibly simple once you open it up - it just sounds a lot more difficult before having done so.

->> It is an interesting concept but I see a few glitches along the way.

Using PM's Live Ingest function is not really necessary as you can point an Automator action to any folder, so you can point it to the folder where the images land from the transmitter. No need for PM to move it to another place with Live Ingest.

There can be problems with Automator keeping up with files. In playing with it I've found that it runs one image thoroughly before looking for the next one, and it can skip them.

Let's say you have three images. Image 1 lands and Automator starts on it. While Automator is running image 2 lands. Automator finishes image 1 and looks for a new image. For some reason, at times Automator will not see image 2 as a "new" image and it sits. When image 3 lands it starts on that one and never gets around to image 2.

Then the big problem I see is running a slideshow in PM. PM does a great job with slideshows, but you would have to test how it does with new images coming in. PM does not update its viewing window often so I don't know how adding new images to a "live running" slideshow will be handled. Will they then show up or will PM only run on the images that were there when it started the slide show and ignore any new files coming in.

As far as doing the transmitter stuff to get to the computer, that is no problem, it's the steps beyond that where a few problems can arise and you will have to find solutions.
