->> Hey guys,
I've been contacted to use a photo or two for a book. Tufting to write up a quote. Writer says budget will be out of his pocket as publisher is not footing the bill.
First edition will be 10,000 copies and will be 3/4 to full page (interior) paperback trade size.
I'm use to advertising rates but have never put one togethr for a book.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated. |

->> Daniel,
First, buy this - http://www.cradocfotosoftware.com/fotoQuote-Pro/
It will teach you that book usage is considered editorial and there are 8 categories under "Book - Editorial" in which to determine usage rates in addition to press run and image size. |

| ->> ahhh..Daniel...just so you know...the old "budget will be out of his pocket" is usually bullshit. if the publisher is dishing out the money to publish a book they will fork over the dough IF the photo is really needed. |

| ->> Thanks Ric! Chuck i agree, publisher isn't footing the bill the author is. Don't think he is going for it and I'm not in the business of working for free I mean for 'credit.' |

->> Daniel- this is pretty standard for many books. I have a bunch of sports writer friends who have authored books through large and small publishers. Writers must pay for all inside photographs from his or her money, and the publisher pays for cover image. Very few writers are willing to pay much, especially if they are rookies and did not get a good advance.
Of course- none of this is your problem. Good luck. |
