But Canon, why are your cameras all backwards?
I rented a 5D Mk II for a video project I'm doing and every, freakin' button is the complete opposite of my Nikons!
Ok, let me have it for starting a ridiculous thread... |

Canons are not "backwards. They operate in the correct way, the Leica way.
The original Canon rangefinders were based on Leicas whereas the original Nikon rangefinders were based on the Zeiss Ikon Contax cameras.
Zeiss chose, for some reason, to make sure that all of its cameras and lenses worked in the opposite direction as compared to a Leica.
So you can blame it on marketing. |

| ->> Nic... it all happened during the Korean War when Nikon and Canon were vying for a place in the 35mm camera market against Leica. Both Canon and Nikon were giving out free rangefinders to war photogs. Jim is right about the differences in focusing direction. I've shot both, but am a long time Canon user and still have my old Canon 35mm rangefinder. It is a great mantle piece. |

->> Saying Canon is backwards is like saying the British drive on the wrong side of the road. They actually prefer to drive on the opposite side of the road and build pretty damn good cars doing it.
Same thing with Canon and the Cameras, except, Canon twists in the logical direction and all other companies should follow suit.
Neither is wrong but I have noticed that more often than not, that several companies prefer to twist the Canon way and not the Nikon way; or the Leica way and not the Contax way. Thats not a knock on Nikon, just an observation.
Nikon does make a very good camera system and is second best over all other Digital SLR camera makers. Thats an amazing accomplishment and something that should be applauded.

Personally, I've always found pulling buttons to be awkward. |

| ->> I have both systems, Nikon and Canon. My Canon gear is my preferred choice. I also use Mac and PC computers, but I am denying the existence of the Microsoft products due to their gigantic suck factor. I'm also suffering from my third mid-life crisis, and shouldn't be considered a reliable source of information as I find most things that are highly reflective, and trendy to be the cats meow. Besides, my paper provides free, expensive, and fast glass for my Canon bodies. I had to buy 1D MII bodies over the company 40D bodies provided, and haven't looked back. I have a Ford too. It's just a personal preference thing. All the cool kids shoot Canon though. Bugs Bunny said years ago, "If you can't beat um, join um." |
