About three hours ago, high winds caused the stage to collapse at the grandstand at the state fair. I wasn't there, I was photographing another event, across town, but Indianapolis Star colleague and staffer Matt Kryger was.
I just called him to get the scoop. He said he'd seen a youtube video of the event, and describes it as happening "100 times slower" than the clip.
Just prior to the opening act, the organizers decided that photographers would be allowed access to the sound board area, about 30 meters from the stage, not the "pit" area, where access is usually granted, right where the stage collapse happened.
As was the case, the opener performed, then a break for setup of country act Sugarland. Kryger said that about a minute prior to the collapse, a spokesman came out onstage, warned crowd members of a storm bearing down on the area, and advised people to head to shelter, away from the exposed dirt track near the stage.
Then all hell broke loose. A chaotic scene, and Matt did a great job of documenting it. His photos are being linked to across the internet.
Condolences to people who lost loved ones there, a tragic day for a great state fair. |

->> Robert, glad to hear everyone from The Star is ok (and all the other photographers/media people as well), I was at the Fever game and they made an announcement about high winds and severe weather.
I didn't realize it was so bad until I went back to the media work room. I saw all the postings on Facebook and saw Matt's coverage, he was exceptional, as usual. (Just don't tell him I said that. lol) |

| ->> Definitely a tragic event. The photos did a great job of documenting the tragedy but the thing that I noticed looking through them was, why do they put those kind of photos for sale to the public? I know papers are trying for every bit of revenue they can muster in these hard times but it just struck me as a little odd. I guess they all do it so it is what it is. |

| ->> Wow. Excellent job documenting a tough scene by Kryger. I was glad to see that hundreds of people jumped in to help rescue people out from under the collapsed stage. |

The Indy Star is reporting that the gust that blew the stage rigging over wasn't part of the gust front from the storm the fair and the NWS were watching. It took place 25 minutes before the projected arrival of the storm. Also, it was reported by others that the PA announcer had only gone over the evacuation procedures in anticipation of having to use them when the storm eventually hit. No evacuation order was actually issued. |

My guess at a simple answer: If you're someone who was there who may need documented evidence of what happened for legal reasons, you're going to try and get a copy of those photos. Much easier to just have the print function enabled than deal with 1000 calls from lawyers. (ex: if you plan to sue the production company, or defend the production company from a suit.)
Newspapers usually won't hand over unpublished images, but "reprints" of published photos are fair game.
Simpler answer: its turned on my default and someone didn't turn it off. |

->> Gray- The pictopia system is automatic at all Gannett sites that participate. Anything I shot while I was a staffer at the American (Just left for another job) would automatically be set up for reprint sales because the system looked for my Matt Bush-Hattiesburg American byline in the IPTC and was set up to offer those images for sale since they were shot by a staffer. We did not have acess the system. Our web editor handled pulling down image sales on certain things so their is a method but it was most likely was not on anybody's mind during breaking news.
Glad to see good work from a Gannettoid although it was a horrible event. Keep you heads up |
