| ->> Any ideas? Been doing a lot of research and everyone seems to have mixed opinions. Anyone care to throw in their two cents? |

| ->> I use the Sennsheiser MKE 400 when I 'm not using a wireless mic and it works really nice for B-roll clips. It's nice and compact and I think it runs about $200...Dan. |

| ->> Dan thanks, that's one of the few I had narrowed down to. Any problems with wind? Also wireless mic suggestions? |

->> Depends on how much you want to spend.
These are the mics I use on a regular basis.
Sennheiser ME66 w/K6 power module. It's a super-cardioid, short shotgun mic with great pickup. I use it mostly on my Sony EX1 video camera because of its size. I've tried using it with the DSLRs but the size makes it a little awkward. Great sound quality though with a narrow pickup pattern. Price with the K6 power module is around $500.
Sennheiser ME64 w/K6 power module. This is a cardioid, short shotgun mic that has a wider pickup than the ME66. I use this the most often because of the size. Sound quality is also very good. It does pick up more side noise so I have to pay attention to where it's pointed. Price with K6 power module is around $400+.
Sennheiser MKE400.
I use this for b-roll sound but can be used for interviews if you're within arms length of the subject. Sound is decent for such a small mic. Price is $200.
I've used the Rode Videomic a few times and I've liked the sound from it. I've haven't used it enough to give you the ins and outs. It's similar in size to the Sennheiser ME64/K6 combo but a little bulkier so given that, I'd rather use the ME64. I believe there are two different versions out. Price between the two is $150 - $200. |

->> +1 for the MKE-400.
I taped the mount with Gaffer's and re-superglued it after the plastic shock mount part broke, but it sounds really good. |

| ->> Mine came with a dead cat mic thingy and it seems to work when it's a little windy. |

->> I've been using the Rode Videomic for my 5D Mark II video, and I've been quite happy with it.
If you're concerned about wind noise, you'll need to get something known as a "dead cat". It's a furry sock you put over the microphone that reduces the wind noise considerably - doesn't eliminate it completely, so if you're shooting video in a hurricane, you're getting wind noise. Just saw it on the B&H website for about $40 US. |

->> Nic: Still shooting with the D7000? If so, do you still like it?
I'm planning to rent one the end of the month just to try out its video capabilities. Also waiting to see what Nikon may introduce the end of the month. Third possibility is to go with something like the Canon XA10. |

->> Hey PJ,
I am. I like it quite a bit. I think it's on par with the 7D in terms of video.
That said I just rented a 5D for a high-end video project I have for a client, but will also have my D7K on board. |

->> Here's a pretty good shootout of small mics http://youtu.be/9aluFqQQ7is
I use a Rode VideoMic (original). Sound quality is good, DIP switches for db cut is buried in the battery compartment making it very, very hard to switch. Plastic foot is easily broken (I replaced mine with a metal foot after it broke). Elastic isolation bands keep breaking (I replaced some with an o-ring). With the optional dead cat on it the furry gets into the image of my 10-22mm Canon when set to wide on my 7D.
If I were to get a new mic it would probably be the newer Rode VideoMic Pro. |
