5D Mk II Video Conversion Questions

->> So I'm shooting a video project for a client at the end of the month using a 5D Mark II.
I'm not overly familiar with the 5D video as I shoot Nikon, but it's more of general video question. From my understanding, the 5D video files are H.264.
The client needs the final product at 1080p, 50i
I'm using Final Cut Express to edit and use MPEG Streamclip for converting my video.
Three questions:
1 - Because I'm shooting the video for a European client and they want it at 50i, do I want to shoot NTSC or PAL?
2 - What is my best conversion for FCE from the original 5D files to edit in?
3 - For the 5D video, what should my export settings in FCE be for best quality?
Thanks in advance. I feel a bit noob-y asking these questions as I've shot video, but I can't find these answers anywhere... |

->> 1. PAL
2. Apple Intermediate Codec (that's about the only choice you'll have)
3. Export as Apple Intermediate Codec (FCE doesn't give you too many export choices).
If you have the time, once you export the AIC full res file, use MPEG Streamclip to transcode that file to AppleProRes if you like or whatever the client wants. |

| ->> Seconding everything Myung Chun said. PAL because you're producing for Europe, AIC because you're using FCE. |

->> Nic, do this quick test using a short clip.
Where you're transcoding the 5DMk2 files in MPEG Streamclip, for frame sizes, try 1920x1080 and also 1440x1080. See which one shows up properly when you import into FCE.
Some of my colleagues use FCE with their Canon video files and we had problems with stretched aspect ratios when it was 1920x1080. |

->> "1080p 50i"
This is a contradiction...you're saying both progressive and interlaced - you can't have both, only one or the other. You should have them clarify.
Chances are they want it 1080i/50fps (non drop frame) if it's for Europe. 1080p is not capable of being broadcast at this time and it makes the workflow a little clunkier - again ask them 'cause they might want to do the interlacing themselves.
Keep in mind the 5D2 does not do 50 or 60 fps...it's 25/30 or 23.976/29.976 (drop frame), so you'll be doing conversion to get the frame rate up. Make sure you have everything set for the proper drop-frame mode (probably non for PAL but check). |
