Repairing your own Canon 70-200

->> Every once in a while a thread pops up about Canon's 70-200's getting wobbly when the barrel starts to come loose internally. I didn't have time to send it off so I just did it myself and documented. It just required a set of precision screwdrivers from Radio Shack. Hopefully it'll help someone else out down the line.

Standard stuff applies - if you screw up your lens, it's your own fault. If you strip a screw, use a screw extractor to get it out (available at Home Depot). Don't use worn-out screwdrivers. Don't get in over your head. It's cheaper to send it off than to break it more. :)

Most annoying thing was keeping things oriented properly - everything is radially symmetric. Using the labels + text on the lens helped out a bit with that.

Not entirely sure how long these links will work, so if they're dead just drop me a message and I'll post a new one.

->> Now that is adventurous. I did venture enough to remove the front element of my 28~135 IS to get rid of dust, but go into my 70~200... don't think so. Good job of documenting it though.

->> It's really not that difficult, given you keep everything organized. Having a little experience with electronics might make it a little less scary, but you're not really dealing with the electronic or optical parts in this situation.

After having worked on it, I will say that it was relatively simple - you don't have to bother with individual elements inside the lens; they're all grouped together in nice packages to you don't have to worry about losing your calibration or alignment. You just stick the pieces back together and off you go! I was expecting to at least tweak my AF or lose calibration in some way, but all it did was sharpen right up.

It's just a few big components, which just fit together like a really expensive, well-made, delicate-to-touch, and probably electrically charged puzzle... Really though, worst case, it ends up taking the same amount of time to send off to get fixed, only some tech at CPS or Midstate is going to mock you when you're not around. :D

->> I dropped mine at Canon Irvine yesterday and cost me $162 for fixing my wobble. I had to drive up there anyway to drop off a failed drive...$975 to retrieve photos off a brand new drive that tanked after 3 days. Worse, it was the target drive for all of my back up files. Failed before I could copy it to another drive and now I have zero!!

->> Ouch... That'll keep you paranoid about backups for a while! I keep having recurring dreams about drives crashing, it's bad...
