Tripod collar sticking

->> Any suggestions on how to get my tripod collar on 300/2.8 to loosen up and slide a bit more smoothly?

Oil? Grease? What's the recommended solution?

->> Given how these lenses are machined, ideally, they shouldn't need any lubrication. If your lens is sticking, it may be a case of something out of adjustment rather than lack of lubrication.

That said, if you don't want to deal with sending it in to CPS or another repair facility, I would suggest a teflon-based lubricant rather than petroleum based one.

->> If it is a Canon non-IS version if you remove the metal identification plate, there is an opening underneath. As you rotate the collar, you will see a number of screws. These hold the bearings in place. Make sure they are all in place, and tightened down.

If it is a Canon IS version - remove the tripod collar to check/tighten.

The screws are quite small, so you will need a set of micro/jewelers screwdrivers.

->> Should also mention - you may get more/faster responses by asking via the Equipment Q&A under the Members Area. I've always received prompt and valuable assistance when I have done so - frequently within minutes of sending my question.

->> Thanks guys and thanks Mark, I will try the q&a next time. I just removed the ring, looks like some sort of gunk made it under the ring and was jamming it up. I gave it a good clean. Will test it tonight at football camp but it looks like it should be all good now.
