->> Maybe this has been covered, maybe not. Just a hypothesis. Heard about GoToMyPC for the iPad today. Well, there has been discussion on here about the best way to utilize the iPad for speedy work from the field. Maybe software/apps have gotten better, but there seemed to be limitations, especially with no Photo Mechanic support.
So...GoToMyPC works on Macs. In theory couldn't you run your iPad lean, pay the $100 a year for GTMPc access, and have your whole desktop on your iPad...even your FTP apps?
Has anyone looked at this? Tried this? Heck, I have never tried GTMPc and don't own an IPad, but if this would work, I would be down with only carrying an iPAd and a card reader....
Thoughts? |

->> Scott ... GoToMyPC could work ... but you would have to upload ALL the images you wanted to work on to the remote PC GoToMyPC is nothing more than a VNC service ... you couldn't edit them on the iPad by tapping into the resources of the remote PC ...
Also, you don't really need the $100 GoToMyPC deal if you have a mac running OS X 10.6.6 or newer all you need is a $19.99 app ... the Screens iPad app is a great VNC option, then setup the Back to My Mac function in your OS X System Preferences and you can access your remote computer from across the room or anywhere on the planet you have an internet connection ...
In addition, I routinely process, crop, caption, keyword and ftp small quantities of images using Filterstorm Pro (only $14.99) on the iPad ... works great ...

->> So now I am glad I started this thread. Just trying to lighten the load. I have a phone with free Wifi Hotspot, so I wouldn't need the 3G. What are the import options now for the iPad to get images from a CF card? And, will the iPad talk to RAW files. And, will Filterstorm save IPTC presets?
Sorry, I had been on the fence about an iPad, but it looks like several of the early shortcomings have been addressed with software or hardware.
Thanks... |

->> It's pretty much yes to all of the above ... on IPTC and RAW for Filterstorm (both pro and regular versions)
First ... only certain CF card readers will work with the iPad ... I use the Kodak 50-in-1 USB2 reader in conjunction with the iPad Camera Connection Kit ... the reader is available for under $7 ... and the CC kit is $30 ...

... or ... you could go direct by sending the images to the iPad from your camera using an Eye-Fi Sd card (With the appropriate CF to SD card adapter for your camera) via WiFi ... though you need the Pro X-2 card to transmit RAW files over WiFi ... all the other cards only work with jpeg files ...

This card and CF adapters can be found at the usual camera retailers for less than the suggested retail price ... |
