->> I gotta ask....where do you guys get the dough to go to all these conferences/conventions? I always see the same names saying you're going to stuff....and you're students too. Am I missing something? are you guys independently wealthy? 8)
I mean, I have a full time job and I can't even think about heading out to one of these deals....let us in on the secret of where you come up with the dough. A Sportsshooter column is here for sure.... |

->> Chuck,
Somehow I suspect it involves stuffing 6 bodies in a rented Yugo with a folded Amana carton lashed to the top. Expand the carton in a park and voila - housing! Meals from Aldi and you're on the student plan... |

->> Dave is pretty much on the money, if you can reduce the cost of the hotel and travel as much as possible, it can be more affordable if you save up for it in advance.
So you get a group of people together, pack a car and not mind a lack of personal space. Having shared a room with 10 people before... was still more space than the dorms... and you only resort to that when there is no one around the area with a friend/uncle/aunt of someone in the group to stay with. You bring a sleeping bag, etc.
In the case with some workshops, you can attend as a student volunteer, these are great because they provide food/place to stay and you get to learn (maybe not as much) but its free. Some also offer free tuition for next year if you volunteer this year.
I also don't have an ex-wife, mortgage or child support to pay. (Some student loans, however.) |

| ->> Chuck, I live and work about 20 minutes from Denver. The only reason that I can afford to go is because I don't have to worry about transportation or lodging. The conference is the same price as a year of Gold CPS membership. |

->> When there is a will, there is a way.
I have hosted my fair share of SSA Alums. From SSA IV to SSA VI, and even the last one SSA VII which I did not even attend. SSA VI was quite a memorable experience with the whole Mizzo Crew crashing for that workshop.
I enjoy the opportunity to host because it develops relationships in this PJ community that will last for years to come. |

Wow, as a claustrophobe, germanophobe and a bit of an anthropophobe, you basically just described my nightmare (that, or being chased down by a diarrhoeal Pegasus). Seriously, I was having a panic attack just reading your post. |

->> Well, since you asked...
I'm working my way through college, paying all my bills and saving the money I'm making. I'm not eating top ramen every night either; I'm just putting my resources towards learning and building my network.
Plus, these kinds of events are just plain fun -- it's not every day that I get to spend time with like-minded people.
For me, what sealed the deal was inexpensive airfare to Denver from Seattle ($200 RT).
Nothing independently wealthy about that. |

| ->> I'm in Denver, this is the first time I heard of this thing. I'd probably attend if any part of it is open to "non members"?? can't quite discern from the tumblr page. Also could be open to hosting someone, feel free to send me a note if you're interested. I live close to downtown and walking distance to the lightrail that goes to and fro all day and night. |

->> Pretty much what Dan said, except that I'm outta school. I budget and save to be able to attend a workshop or conference every year.
It takes some sacrifices but I consider it an investment in my career, never know who's desk my portfolio may end up on one day and having them think, "Oh I remember that guy..." could be the difference between getting a look or phone call and ending up in the recycling bin.
Plus the flight was cheap and I'm sure it'll be a blast. |

The lineup is shaping up to be really good -- look at this speakers list & schedule: even SportsShooter is represented. Sol Neelman (Weird Sports) is speaking on the opening night.
