thanks |

->> Jack,
I upgraded yesterday when it came out and I like it a lot. Pretty much same interface with many add-ons for gestures, so its almost IPAD like.
I am also noticing everything just running faster in general. |

| ->> I'm starting to see blog comments and reviews saying that some 3rd party software isn't working right, and they're scrambling to get updates together to make their programs work with it. I absolutely have to have PhotoMechanic and Lightroom working full speed. Has anyone had any experiences with compatibility/functionality of those two with it? If they work, I'm dying to install it for the email, trackpad, and desktop management features. |

Photo Mechanic and Lightroom works good so far.
When it comes to Canon-specific software.
DPP seems to work, also the software for WFT-settings.
But EOS Utility does not work. |

Main thing that's different is that my trackpad scrolls the opposite direction, but I'm starting to get used to it. |

I did the installation last night on two computers (a brand new iMac and a 3 yr old MacBookPro) with no problems. So far I like Lion. All my software, with the exception of a couple of antique games and some widgets I don't use anyhow, work fine. |

->> For those of you that may be uncomfortable about upgrading to Lion, you may find the Lion Info Center at http://www.tidbits.com/ worth checking out. Their Take Control eBook, Take Control of Upgrading to Lion, is well done...as are all of their Mac and Internet centric ebooks.
TidBits is the second oldest Mac centric site on the Internet and their inexpensive, but expertly written and formatted, ebooks should be considered for your Mac toolkit.

I've got Lion running on a minimum spec 2006 iMac with 3GB RAM and a 2009 13" MacBook Pro with 4GB RAM and both seem to be performing well without any issues. Aperture on the MacBook Pro is quick as usual. I'll install to my new 27" maxed-out iMac shortly, but don't expect any problems after filtering out my PowerPC apps requiring Rosetta from the other items.
Lastly, Sportsshooter member Thomas Boyd, gives his first impression on Lion here:

->> I just upgraded as well ... first doing a clean install on an external FW800 drive for testing ... that way I could revert back to Snow Leopard with no hassle if I discovered early adoption not to be in my best interests ...
The only app, I seem to have issues with was Toast Titanium 7 ... it was listed as Universal on the info ... but won't run on Lion ... so I guess that is the only app I may have to upgrade ...
I concur that Lightroom 3.4 and PSCS5 run very nicely ... and even InDesign CS3 seems to hang in there ... I was even able to print after seeing that others had issues with printing ... though when I did try to print my test document, Software Update asked me to download updated drives ...
I was also pleasantly surprised that doing a clean install, then using Migration Assistant to move over files and apps and other supporting files ... the new install was 30GB leaner than Snow Leopard ... not sure what they cut back, or pared down, but more disc space is always a good thing ...
I also don't seem to mind the reverse scrolling ... I guess it is just like it was back in the old manual focus days ... when working with pool equipment, or different brands, the focus rings needed opposite touch ... the brain kicks in and takes control if you don't let it get to you initially ...
So far ... I'm liking the upgrade pretty well ... |

Can you recommend a site to back up my files and what not to be able to do a clean install then reinstall the programs?
Also how did you do a clean install, as in get it onto a disk?
Thanks in advance. |

->> Hi Matt ... I always keep a mirror copy of my startup drive using Carbon Copy Cloner at least once a week or following any major upgrade, update, etc. ... one for each of my computers ... this is an extra over and above Time Machine ... the drives I back up to are bus powered FW800 drives ... so if the internal startup drive fails, or has other issues, I simply attach the clone and start up from that drive and I am back in business immediately ... I don't have anything backed up online, though I do keep a set of drives off site ...
Normally you would have a DVD to use to install the OS ... however, with Lion only available as a download from the Mac App Store ... you either have to burn your own DVD ... or what I did was install the base Lion OS to a USB thumb drive ... not a instal/restore thumb drive like Apple is going to have available ... but the actual base OS itself, just like it would install on a new HD or SSD ... by using a thumb drive instead of an optical disk, startup is much quicker ... plus you can set and/or change custom preferences, something that can't be down easily with a DVD startup disk ...
Then if I ever need to run Repair Permissions or Repair Disk using the Disk Utility app, I simply plug in the thumb drive, hold down the option key on startup and select the thumb drive as my startup volume ... run whatever utilities I need to ... shut the unit down, unplug the thumb drive and start up the computer as normal ...
The very first thing you have to do is after you download the Lion installer is to make a copy of the file ... because once you run the installer it is deleted from your Applications folder ...
What I did was formatted an empty external drive, did the base installation for Lion. Quit the initial setup where it asks if you want to copy over your files and apps from another drive ... then I cloned that new drive to my USB thumb drive ... surprisingly a 8GB drive is enough for the base install, with over 2.5GB to spare ...
Then I restarted the the setup procedure which asks which drive to get your files from, I chose my backup clone of my most recent Snow Leopard with 10.6.8 on it ... once done Lion was ready to go ... I then created a clone of that install as well ...
Here is a link for CCC:
http://www.bombich.com/
And how to make a basic install/restore drive ... (Not the method I used but works well in it's own way ... there are several other tutorials with the same info if you do a search)

I'm not aware of this Andy fellow ... I'm sure he is a good guy ... but the site you mentioned seems to be of little help in determining his reasoning for avoiding the upgrade to Lion ... if there is indeed something here to avoid, the reasons to avoid Lion would be of interest to many here ... |

->> I upgraded Wednesday afternoon. It was pretty fast and smooth on both my iMac (Late 2009) my Air (Late 2010). The download and install took about an hour on each one. For the most part I am liking it. My disk permissions had to be repaired on both after the upgrade and the first time I ran a Time Machine backup it was painfully slow on both. 37 gig on the Air took a little over 5 hrs and 180 gig on the iMac took a horrible 17 hrs. During which time both were pretty much useless because Time Machine ate up all the resources. Since then they have been back to normal.
New Gestures take a little getting used to and most of the more common ones like the 3 finger swipe on the Magic Trackpad to move forward and back in web pages only work in Safari so Firefox and Chrome will need updates. Not even the 2 finger swipes that worked in Snow Leopard work.
Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 2 runs fine but CS2 no longer work and I had a few of the older Fred Miranda Plug-ins that I can no longer use. And MS Office before 08 no longer work either.
Launchpad give it an iPad like feel but is a bit silly because it puts every single application on your Mac on there with absolutely no way to remove them. You can only put them into folders. And if you are running Parallels or some other VM to allow you to run Windows you get every single Windows program on the LaunchPad too.
The "resume" feature while it seems like a good idea gets really annoying really fast until you figure out how to turn it off. It would be nice if you could choose which programs you want to use the resume.
Overall things seem to work faster but lots of apps will need to but updated to take full advantage of it. |

->> I find it hard to understand why so many people, whose professional lives probably depend on the smooth running of their computers, are willing to jump on the Lion band wagon so soon after its release.
There's always a good chance with a major operating system upgrade, and Apple warn you of this, that one or more of the programs that you rely on won't work. That could mean a painful attempt at reversing the upgrade or an even more painful shelling out of dollars for a program "upgrade" that you didn't really need in the first place.
There are bugs. There are always bugs with an X.0 version of an operating system. One of those bugs could mess you up real bad, it's happened before.
I'm not going to attempt an upgrade unless there's something in Lion that I need and so far it ain't there. I'm going to let all of you early adopters find out what's wrong and what won't work while I happily run 10.5.X on my MacBook Pro.
Your cries of anguish and tears of rage will pain me of course but I'll soldier on and wish you well.
The Rules Of Computing:
1) RTFM
2) Never Install Version One of Anything
3) Never Install Version X.0 of Anything
4) No Matter What They Promise, It Won't Get Any Bigger |

"Dear SiteWelder customer,
With the release of Apple's OS X Lion, Adobe has discovered some major problems with Flash and Lion. Flash, in many situations, is hogging processing capacity to the point that it is bringing 10.7 users to a crawl. This same behavior can be seen intermittently on our sites, which have Flash turned on, as well as other large sites like YouTube that use Flash." |
