Mud Day, a sport? No, but tons of fun nonetheless

I'm sure many cities have a "Mud Day" or something like it during the summer. I had no idea how much fun I was going to have when I was assigned to shoot this at a park in Metro Detroit for my newspaper the Detroit Free Press. It seems the perfect opportunity for video storytelling but obviously didn't want to risk a $5,000 Panasonic camera for this so GoPro's it was!
20,000 gallons of water + 200 tons of topsoil and hundreds of kids = Lots of mud, lots of fun!!
I used 3 of my GoPro Motorsport Hero HD's.
One I mounted on a chest harness that a 9-year-old wore and the other two GoPro's I hand held mounted on GorillaPods. Once in awhile I switched settings on a GoPro for shooting stills 1 frame per second so I had stuff (when not using my Canon still gear) to go in the online photo gallery and in the paper the next day.

->> Nice Job Eric, I like it. The video looked pretty good I thought. The audio, like the splats and that, was that recorded by the camera or were those sound effects you added in? The one thing I would say is, it wasn't long enough, which is the best compliment I know of for a video. I wanted to see more, so that right there means you edited it perfectly I think because you leave readers wanting to look for more. Very cool.
And where is the picture of you at the end of the day? :) |

No that's the real sound coming from the GoPro. I wouldn't add sound effects as I think that's really crossing the line. At the end when the kid is either tripped or pushed and goes into the mud that sound is from the impact into the thick mud and afterwards.
The GoPro's even with the totally enclosed waterproof housing can still get some sound out of it. Of course it is much better with the back door flap that has vents in it to get the sound much better but then you risk getting the camera muddy, wet etc.
I agree Erik, shorter is better for most video, especially something like this, a bunch of clips put together with no storyline, narration etc. I could only show muddy kids so many ways from so many angles and then it just starts to get repetitive and boring.
No one got a good picture of me at the end of the day that I know of but here are a few

I loved your "Dirty Nikes" picture and you and the gear looked just like I did.

Hardly any sound is transferred when shooting video with the G9 whereas, you get some decent sound with the GoPro. |

I guess if the plastic housing was any more thick less sound would get into the camera.
I think GoPro found a perfect balance.
It even picked up the sound of the one kid wearing my camera and the other kid when he was being a little bully and pushed him down around the 1:01 mark and you hear clear as day "Hey what was that for?!?"
I'd like to think that one kid got revenge at the end of the piece and was the one pushing the bully kid down. LOL!!
$300 just for the housing for a G9?? That the price of one GoPro will all the gadgets you need.

->> Hi Kent,
I had talked to a few kids before hand and just had a feeling this kid would be good so I put the Chesty on him, hit record and let him go do his thing. I checked on him once in awhile as I was elsewhere shooting this and wiped the lens off.
The camera had a 16 gig SD card in it so it could of recorded for 2 hours but it ended up being about an hour of footage from the POV.
The music I got from a royalty free site called Incompetech.com
A great free site with tons of various music. I listened to many tracks trying to find the right feel.
Totally recommend the site to anyone doing video storytelling. All they require is credit at the end of your piece. Pretty cool.
